I rarely (if ever) take antibiotics - benefit or not?

Question:
I understand antibiotics are becoming less effective as time moves on, with the potential for them to become virtually worthless in the (near?) future.

Is this for people who take them excessively, or for everyone?

Answers:
The more the general population takes them, the more resistant the strains of bacteria get.they mutate and adapt. Also, they are way over-prescribed as research shows that nearly 90% of any infection a person gets is caused by a virus, and antibiotics do NOTHING for viruses! They actually make your immune system weaker by killing off the beneficial bacteria inb our gut, thus creating a more favorable environment for the virus, making a person sicker. Then you can come down with a bacterial infection which may or may not respond to a different antibiotic. That being said, when used aas they were intented to be, in real bacterial infections where it is past the body's ability to recover on its own, antibiotics can be used effectively. Good luck and God Bless.
I think it for those who take it in excess.
it applies mainly to those who take them excessively (like for every cold and every flu)

antibiotics dont work for viruses because they only kill bacterial infections like staph or strep.

if people keep taking them for viruses then the viruses will build up an immunity to what really gets rid of them.
Well, it depends. If you haven't ever needed antibiotics, then that's good. When people say they are becoming less effective, that's usually aimed at people who take them a lot. There is a growing concern about doctors prescribing antibiotics for conditions, like colds, that don't respond to antibiotics, therefore just increasing someone's resistance to them.

If you haven't ever needed to take them, I'm sure you're probably fine. Also there are varying strengths of antibiotics so if you ever DID get an infection and need them, they could try different ones. But no, if you've hardly ever taken them you probably are NOT resistant.
Good for you the kill you immune system.
It's for people who take them excessively. Just like anything else, their body builds an immunity to them also. That's why with a lot of drugs legal or illegal people have to keep taking more and more each time to get the same results.
actually, anitbiotics are still very effective in treating many diseases. if your doctor prescribes antibiotics for a disease, u should take them. if u take too many of them when u dont need them, then your body can become immune, but thats ONLY if you take them excessively. you may want to check the source that said that antibiotics are becoming useless because i dont think thats true. just listen to ur doctor is the best advice i can give
Alot of docs will prescribe them even for the common cold, it does nothing, helps step and ear infections ect.you sound very healthy and just dont require them which is good (o:
Our bodies were designed to fight off anything our environment throws are it. Good for you! I havent had an antibiotic in 5 years. We do seem to build up an immunity to them as we use more and the germs do too. We need stronger antibiotics as the germs get immune. Ihave worried about giving my daughter a small dose of analmost useless antibiotic for her acne. Overall, the less you rely on meds and build up your own system... themore you willbenefit.
This is only for people that take them excessvely...like for common colds and other things. So you should be fine!
antibiotics are history, uve gotta try mirijuana, to keep away the germs,,
unfortunately antibiotics (if they become completely useless) will most likely become compeletley useless to everyone. There are a lot of circumstances to think about though. Certain antibiotics may only be useless to people who have a mutated bacteria that is no longer susceptible to the antibiotic. The reason is because a lot of people take unnecessary medications. For example, people with the common cold go all the time to the doctor for medication when the common cold can't be treated by a prescription medication/ antibiotic. when the medication is prescribed, the virus/bacteria may mutate and become stronger than before and then the medication is virtually useless. Lucky for us, scientist are always coming out with new medications, so antibiotics won't become useless in the near future, but it could possibly happen someday.
For now, if your doctor pres
cribes antibiotics for an infection, they will work very quickly. But you must take them all, or the infection will come right back. People shouldn't have to be taking them excessively, or they have a problem! For example, 6 years ago I kept getting pneunomia over and over. Antibiotics worked for about a week. Long story short, I have "pulninary fibrosis," which means I don't have enough oxygen in my blood. So I've had to live on oxygen since age 48 until forever. But for your everyday bladder infection, for example, antibiotics are the only way to go. :)
Better if you don't use. Just use it when necessary and always through medical prescription.
The excess of use of antibiotics makes you to develop resistance to them.
