It's caused because the person cannot eliminate fluid through the kidneys, and it's building up in their tissues.
retaining water because of ineffeciency
When the liver and kidneys no longer work, the fluid builds up in the body as it can no longer be processed and excreted.

Kidney and liver failure is very life threatening.
nephrologist

the swelling is due to the body being unable to eliminate fluids. this is why those with end stage renal disease are put on dialysis
I'm not a medical specialist, but I can tell you that kidney failure can cause you to swell. Basically, when your kidneys aren't functioning correctly, your body can't rid itself of waste. Many times, doctors will prescribe a water pill , or diuretic, which makes you pee - depending on the severity. If you have liver and kidney failure, you should be seeing a doctor on a regular basis and at some point may have to go on dialysis if you aren't already.

Best of luck to you!
in liver failure there is decrease in production of proteins causing decrease in blood osmolarity which cause the fluids to shift from the vessels toward surrounding tissue causing edema(swelling)
Edema occurs with fluid retention of renal failure and hypoalbuminemia of nephrotic syndrome
it is caused by the fluid build up since the kidneys get rid of that fluid. They can give you laysix pills to help get rid of it, but it will not get rid of all of it. Plus if the person is in full renal failure then they will be put on dialysis which will reduce it as well.
