Is my doctor crazy? or is it really a virus?

Question:
ok for the last 2 days i've had severe liquid poop... plus bad cramping and bodyaches. My doctor claims its just a "virus' and should pass through me- meanwhile i'm suffering quite severely. They told me to take some immodium... and do a stool sample.. I'm quite familiar with the stool sample, and i did one already - all liquid i might add... and dropped it back off.. but they take about a week and a half to get back to the doctors, isn't this dangerous? I'm drinking as much liquids as possible - given the fact that all of what i consume tends to fly out my rear at the velocity of a space shuttle taking off..

Why didn't he tell me to take an antibiotic asap?

Answers:
It's good that you are drinking lots of fluids (most people don't do this and end up in pretty bad shape), make sure that you pay attention to your electrolytes though all that water entering and leaving your body might upset the balance. Other than that, i'd trust your doctor. Antibiotics only work on bacteria, and it's a pet peeve of mine that people self-perscribe antibiotics...(that's where extensively drug resistant TB (XDRTB)...MSRA and other antibiotic bacteria come from...leaving us chemists to try and fix the mess.)
take activated charcoal and it will absorb whatever is irritating your intestines and stop the diarrhea also get a good fiber in you, not metamucil, one that is thick and looks like fiber!!
Antibiotics do not work on virus infections.
and It will pass (excuse the pun!) keep drinking. and eat binding food llike white bread, eggs, bananas, potatoes etc.
Most stomach bugs are caused by viruses. To put you on antibiotics would be irresponsible of him, and quite possibly make your diarrhea worse.

Just keep on doing what you are doing, and take the imodium and you should be fine in a day or two.
Because, if it is not an infection and you put an antibiotic on top of an upset stomach - bad news. Most antibiotics can aggravate your stomach ( nausea, vomiting and diarrhea) Why make it worse if there is no need??
An antibiotic is for bacterial infections. Viral infections, unfortunately, have to take their course.

Hope you're feeling better SOON!
antibiotics are prescribed for bacterial infections, not viral infections. generally for a virus affecting the digestive system, there really isn't much to do other than keeping hydrated as much as possible. also, a lot of antibiotics can just add to diarrhea and stomach pains. i'm sorry you're so ill, it's horrible. if you are not sure your doctor did the right thing, you can get a second opinion. it is your body and you have a right to be sure and feel properly taken care of.
sounds like rotavirus to me. It is the most awful, painful stomach virus ever. I was sick for almost a month with it. No antibiotic will help. It just makes your stomach 100 times worse. All you can do is just let it pass.
Because an antibiotic does nothing for a virus; it's for a bacterial infection. I suggest you stop eating much - or at least restrict yourself to the BRAT diet - bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. I'd stop dairy for a while, too, if I were you.
