Can anyone tell me what its like to have your gull bladder removed?

Question:
What was the surgery like? How long did it take to recover? Are there any pre-op requirements/procedures to go through? Any other details would be great to hear about also. THX:)

Answers:
I've never had my gallbladder removed but I have assisted several times in the removal of other people's gallbladder.

It's usually a painless procedure (while u are having it removed). You are put to sleep (good ol' anesth).

They can either do the procedure laparoscopically- they make about 4 small incisions at various parts/points of your abdomen. They insert a long tube with a camera at the end (to see your insides) and another long tube that sorta has a scissor at the end (to cut vessels and remove the bladder). They also have a tube that is sorta like a "hand" to move things, like your liver, aside.

The camera will project your inside onto a nice screen that the doctors will be watching as they perform the procedure.
Once they start (not including the time u enter the room and go to sleep) they can take anywhere from 40mins to over an hour.
Once they removed the gallbladder they emove it (while placed in a sack) from one of the holes they made(this will probably be the largest insertion made). They rinse you out with sterile water and suction that out. Then they stick you back up.
When u awake in recovery, you will have small tiny sticky tapes on your stomach where they made the incisions.

You may feel a little pain, you should be able to ask for pain meds. You will then be monitored for bowel sounds, making sure everything is working ok and you are able to drink and things of that nature.
If no other complications arise you can go home the next day.

The other method is to plain out open you up(make one big cut into your abdomen and everything is out in the open) and take out the gallbladder.

The laparoscopic way leads to less bleeding and decrease hospital stay.
Well now, when I had MY gull's bladder removed- he died. So I don't recommend it. :P
I don't believe it's a tough surgery, but no surgery is without risks. You really need to ASK THE SURGEON these questions dear!
I am a doc and will try to answer you from my patients' experience!
With laparoscopic surgery it is not as major or serious operation as it used to be.
I think even with open surgery, it takes one week to 10 days to recover. Follow your doctor's, surgeon's and anaesthetist's advice to the word. That will be important. In general it will be better to avoid fatty food, make sure you don't have colds or cough before operation, (take prompt treatment if you have), keep fasting after 10 PM previous night to surgery.
Good luck!
Very simple. I went in to same day surgery and had this done with one incision inbetween my upper rib cage, one on the bottom portion of belly button and two small ones on the side. My surgeon did a very good job because there is no visible scar and I feel great. The first day after surgery was painful since they fill you with air to expand area. Other than that it really was not that bad. Good Luck
My dad has his gall bladder removed 15 years ago, and he is still alright now.

What I can recalled now is after the operation, he seems quite ok. If you need to go for the operation, you have to don't hesitate as you are the one who is going to suffer if you don't.
I had my gallbladder out in 2002. I was sick, vomiting the week prior. I was so exhausted and worn out I went to the ER. They ran tests and told me it was my gallbladder. They actually sent me home at that point to drink lots of clear fluids and go back in a week to have the surgery. When I went back they ran the usual pre op tests and said I was ready for surgery. The anesthesiologist came in and started my IV and gave me 'sleepy medicine' and the next thing I knew, I was back in my room with my husband and daughter staring at me. Oh, they kept me in 3 days. But all people are different. They tried to do the simple incision and just take the gallbladder out that way but they said the stones were huge, the size of golf balls so I had to have a major incision done.
