Way to keep kidneys healthy? What does harm over time?

Question:
My bf is 33 and had a bone marrow transplant after being diagnosed with lukemia about five years ago. He's fine now, but today the docs said they should monitor his kidneys.

I was wondering what type of things affect the kidneys, how to keep them healthy, and what to avoid?

P.S. - He doesn't drink alcohol or anything, so that's one thing we don't worry about. But what about his choices in food? Does that make a different?

Thanks : )

Answers:
He should drink lots of water & cranberry juice, but avoid sodas at all costs! If there's any danger of him possibly needing a kidney transplant in the future, he should get educated on a low phosphorus diet now. A nephrologist (kidney dr.) in your local hospital should be able to provide you with a kidney patient diet chart (they're posters to put on the fridge).
