Why is E-Coli bad?

Question:
It's for a school project - thanks heaps ;-)

Answers:
E. coli is bad because it causes a number of illness, such gastoenterities (food poisoning), speticemia (bacteria in the blood) urinary tract infections, and neonatal meningitis. Most of the time when you hear about E. coli in the news, it is usually due to an outbreak of E. coli (E. coli O157:H7 specifically) causing food poisoning. It is estimated that E. coli causes about 270,000 cases of food-borne disease each year with roughly 1000 deaths. Most cases of food poisoning resolved themselves and go unreported so it is hard to get an actual number.

E. coli is by far the most common cause of urinary tract infections. Upwards of 20-30% of women have recurring UTIs in their lifetime. Although the majority of infections are short-lived, they do contribute to a significant amount of deaths each year.

It should also be noted that E. coli cause significant diseases in poultry and livestock. E. coli is the most common bacterial infection in poultry. These infections in livestock have enormous impact on the US economy. Annual losses in livestock due to E. coli is in the billions of dollars.
