Why are yawns contagious?

Question:

Answers:
There was some interesting research completed recently (though I can't remember where I read it) that spoke of it's possible evolutionary connection.

It showed that yawning not only increases oxygen to the brain, but it also cools down the temperature of the brain.
It definitely helps you be more alert.

In pack animals there is similar "contagious"behaviour and it is believed to be related to pack security and maintaining alertness.

Wish I had the paper to refer you to.
Hope this helps
People say you yawn because you need oxygen to the brain. Other people see it & subconsciously notice they need oxygen to their brain, too.
