I have Crohn's Disease and I want to take the product Colonex 700. Would it affect my Crohn's & make it worse?

Question:
I have Crohn's Disease and I'm afraid taking Colonex 700 would hurt my Crohn's. Crohn's is more of a reaction of the body to all the nasty bacteria we put in it than a disease but that's what it's called is a disease. Colonex 700 cleanses the colon of all that bacteria but my family won't let me take it unless they know 100% that it will not harm me, and I'm only 17 so I have to do what my family says. Someone, help me!

Answers:
kc, I am a fellow crohn's patient for over 21 yrs. CD is not a reaction but an actual disease b/c our gut is inflammed when the disease is active & causing other problems like abdominal pain, the big "c" or big "d", fever, fatigue, etc.

You should be under the care of a good GI who is well versed in IBD. check out the crohns and colitis site where you can find information on diet, exercise, newer treatments, and even locate a support chapter where you live. There you will be able to meet others in the same boat as yourself. They have a live chat M-F ( 9am - 5pm ) EST as well as an 800 manned by healthcare professionals well versed in this disease.

Don't believe claims of curing IBD. If it's too good to be true, it most likely is...Trust your doctors, RNs, and actual pts. who've seen and been through it instead of those who have NO CLUE WHAT WE GO THROUGH.

Eat what doesn't bother you, see your MDs faithfully, take your medications, exercise when you feel well, don't smoke, drink, and be sure to call your GI when you do have trouble and don't wait until it gets worse.

CCFA does have a camp for kids like yourself during the summer. check into it and see if you can attend.

take care of yourself. good luck to you.
I don't know if that will help but my girlfriend had several surgeries for hers and suffered for years, Then she found a naturologist and he cured her! You might want to check in to that.
as a fellow crohnie I will advise you Please do not take it!! Side effects can include bowel perferation, & flare up. Your colon is "made" for getting rid of toxins. It is self cleaning acorrding to my gastro. If you have ever had a colonosopy or surgery & had to be "cleaned" out and feel horrible after for like a week, that's what the colonex would do. Try probiotics because your intestines do need good bacteria in order to function right!
There are many things wrong with this approach. If you are on any medications, avoid herbal supplements like the plague. There are many well-documented interactions of herbals with medications, either increasing or decreasing absorption or interfering with their action.

Bacteria may play a role in bringing on Crohn disease, or in exacerbating existing disease. However, to characterize your GI tract bacteria as "nasty" misses the point. You need these bugs to develop and live properly - but the right sorts of bugs, and in the right amounts and ratios. When things get out of balance, you will get increased symptoms like inflammation, gas and pain. This condition is referred to as infection (wrong type of bacteria) or bacterial overgrowth (too many, not in the right place, not enough of the "good guys").

If you are not currently on medications and not currently having any Crohn-related symptoms, it would probably not be harmful to use the product (although it is not clear whether you would risk a flare or an allergic response). If you are experiencing symptoms or are on medications, there are other, safer options to explore first.

To proceed, you should work with your IBD doc as a team to manage your concerns and condition. For example, you can try an elemental diet for 2 weeks, followed by careful, step-wise refeeding to repopulate your gut with the appropriate mix of bacteria. Email me if you have further questions.
Please don't do anything like that. Please. I've had a couple of great gastro doctors in my life - they were open to things other than just prescriptions. NEITHER one would ever approve of this. I'm 36 and have had Crohn's since I was 11. I remember being a teen and wanting something magical to take the pain and emotional suffering away. Your family has your best interests in mind. And I'm not sure where you are getting your information from, but I'd really look at some Crohn's and Colitis websites for sound medical information.

Please do not do this. It will probably do more harm than good and for a Crohn's patient, we have to take VERy good care of our bodies. Eat active culture yogurt and perhaps some supplements to that. It will help the balance. But you are wiping out an entire battlefield - the good guys along with the bad guys.

Good luck and please think twice about doing anything like this. It's just not safe for people like us. I know it's tough - it still is for me. It IS a disease and although different foods can affect how our BODY reacts - it's not the food itself that GIVES us Crohn's. It's like having a bug bite - and then putting alcohol on the bug bite. It'll sting like heck, but the alcohol didn't give you the bite, the bug did. You can't blame the alcohol for what the bug did - don't blame the food for what your body did on its own.
