White spots on hand, are they a problem?

Question:
My friend has 2 or 3 white spots on her forefinger at the base opposite her thumb. She picked one today and its really sore now.
They don't itch and they're not sore usually. They're white, not clear but feel hard to the touch.
She's only just told me, but apparently its been going on in exactly the same spot for about 12 months.
I told her to go to her GP but she said she feels silly. Can anyone back me up on this that it might be worrying?

Answers:
definately worth seeing a GP, even if it's just to put her mind at ease
as you said she has got too go to her GP
it don't feel serious to me but i am not a
doctor.?
It think i have something like that but am not sure if it is the same problem. Mine has two bumps on the side of my thumb and when you touch them it does not hurt unless you actually peel it off. If it just suddenly growing then I suggest she go to a GP otherwise, she should tell someone if it hurts a lot.
