Grr! Itchy scalp driving me crazy... ideas?

Question:
My scalp has been itchy for days now; probably about a week. Sometimes the back of my neck and my very upper back itch too. I tried taking Benadryl, and that didn't help. I just took a special Aveeno (except generic brand) oatmeal soothing bath and my hair's not even dry and I'm itchy again. My mom took a good look and my skin is not red or scaly and she doesn't see any signs of lice or their eggs or anything obvious at all. Because I worked with food on my job I wouldn't touch my head for hours at a time, and I didn't always notice, but sometimes it would really start itching bad and I'd have to go scratch.

It's driving me insane! I'm making a doctor's appointment tomorrow, but I don't know how soon I can get in. I have no idea what else I could try or what this could be. Any ideas? Please let me know!

Answers:
I used to have the same problem. On the advice of a hairdresser I switched to a PH - neutral shampoo (ie not acidic or alkaline) and have been fine ever since.
How to Get Rid of an Itchy Scalp

An itchy scalp can be due to dry skin or hair product buildup. There are a few ways to remedy this condition.

Steps

1. Change your shampoo and conditioner for two weeks to remove buildup from your traditional brand.
2. Dry your hair thoroughly each day. Counterintuitive though it may be, keeping a damp scalp can increase the dry skin and itching.
3. Brush or comb your hair two to three times per day to distribute natural oils, paying special attention to the scalp. Brush gently!
4. Eliminate any hair products that contain alcohol from your hair care regimen.
5. Drink eight 8 oz. glasses of water every day. You could easily be dehydrated!
6. Consider taking a vitamin E supplement.

Tips

* However tempting it is, DO NOT scratch! Scratching will only worsen the problem.
* Be certain to keep your nails very clean as you may be scratching your scalp in your sleep!

GOOD LUCK!!!
Try something with tea tree oil in it!
