Basically, you feel tired and nauseous most of the time. Plus, the loss of your hair. There is also the possibility of anxiety and depression. Not fun, but better than no treatment at all.
Go to your local hospital for information as opposed to the library.
If you have a family doctor that can recommend an oncologist or hospital pharmacist who specializes in chemotherapy, it will show to your teacher that you really want to get the information from a better source than just the easy way out. Hospital oncology floors have so much more to offer and an oncology nurse would be willing to assist you and your questions. Good luck
What characterizes cancer cells is that they typically have a higher metabolic rate and grow much faster than normal cells. So what chemotherapy does is to introduce a "controlled poison" that will be taken up by the cancer cells, and because of their faster metabolism, will kill them first, while just making the cells around them sick. The goal is to kill the cancer while minimizing the "poisoning" of the rest of the person.
Feeling really crappy for a few weeks or months beats the heck out of dying!
chemo, is given by an IV either through a port or directly into a main vein. they do have one chemo pill now, not sure of the name. there are different types of cancer and there are different types of chemo to deal with the type of cancer. the doctors all give you a list of the type of chemo you will get and the list of most side-effects with each chemo given. so people react differently, some people become very sick and others cant tell much of a difference. it all depends on the person and the types of chemo. Just like anything else there are good days and bad days. alot of the cancer deal has to do with you being positive, its hard sometimes.
Basicly it is a kind of cancer treatment with using chemical drugs to kill cancer cells and other fast splitting cells, that is why people lose hairs with taking chemo because hair grow faster than other cells. There are different drugs for different cancer cells, even for same kind of cancer. Depending on the sensitivity of the cells, some chemo drugs are more effecient than others.
I have a blog which documents my personal experience of treating lung cancer. There are some discussion about chemo, if you are interested.
