Side Effects from a Swamp/Evaporative Cooler?
Question:
Answers:
It's not the swamp cooler doing it. I moved from a house to one with a swamp cooler, and no one in my family had side affects.
Always possible, but the bacteria that causes diarrhea is usually not of the airborne type. The bacteria in a swamp cooler is more likely to cause a respiratory problem.
I suspect a food borne illness that should clear up soon. If not, make sure you keep well hydrated and consider visiting a doctor.
While it's not especially likely, it is possible. By definition, swamp coolers involve water, which may harbor certain bacteria and molds. In an environment like AZ, the natural aridity will quickly kill off any unprotected microbes, but nothing prevents an already acquired infection from continuing. In addition, if the swamp cooler was in use for a considerable period of time before you moved in, there could be mold lurking in the house - this might have an adverse effect whether or not you run the cooler.
All that said, I'd be most suspicious of something in the local water supply. If you're in the mountainous regions and have well water, checking for Giardia would be in order. Good luck.
