My brother had his first chemotherapy treatment?
Question:
Answers:
I assume that he is getting chemo from an outpatient clinic? Anyway, here is some advice . . he needs to take his anti-nausea meds on a regular basis while he has chemotherapy. Once a patient gets to the vomiting stage it is difficult to stop it. He should also be well hydrated . . drinking plenty of fluids . . like water or gatorade whatever seems good to him. One of the problems, I think with outpatient clinics is that you do not have access to intravenous meds once you go home.
My son was an inpatient everytime he had chemotherapy for nine months. He was receiving five different high dose chemo drugs intravenously. So, he had access to anti-nausea meds and was on an IV fluid drip. He also has a 'central line' cathetar so he can receive meds instantly. He is currently at home and the home nurses during chemo can also supply him with intravenous fluid and meds. He has the anti-nausea meds in pill form but they are not as effective.
I do not know what dosage your brother is taking, but encourage him to set up a regular time each day to take the anti-nausea meds. My son found that ativan helped the most, but it will make you sleepy. Benedryl also helped. He took both meds around the clock and for a few days post chemo. He also found that essense of peppermint helped with his nausea.
As far as what the vomit looks like, you need to call his doctor or the nurse practitioner and explain what is happening. They will tell you if it is anything to be concerned about.
Best to you.
could be you should call ask a nurse. I pray that your brother gets better. God bless you and your family with good health and happiness
Unfortunately, nausea and vomiting go along with chemo treatments. It usually lasts about 2 to 3 days. Make sure he is getting plenty of rest and fluids so he doesn't dehydrate.
Nausea and vomiting are unfortunately some of the nasty side effects of chemo. Talk with his doctor about getting some medication to control the side effects. I found that Phenergan worked very well, but made me really tired. Zofran was a wonder drug, but is very expensive.
The color is concerning. I suggest calling the doctor right away, he may have some bleeding that should be taken care of right away. However, if he was drinking something red before throwing up, then that is a different story.
most anticancer drugs are made to kill fast-growing cells. But certain normal, healthy cells also multiply quickly, and chemo can affect these cells, too. When it does side effects may result. Other common side effect include an increased chance of bleeding, getting an infection, or developing anemia. These side effects result from changes in blood cells during chemotherapy.
It is common for a chemo patient to be given an anti-nausea prescription prior to chemo to be taken during chemo and for several days thereafter. Lorazepan is a common one and ativan is another if lorazepan doesn't work. My experience with Rituxan and CHOP chemo given for lymphoma was the anti-nausea meds I was given prevented my ever having a single moment of nausea. Definitely check with the oncologist or if you have access to an oncology nurse hotline call them. He definitely needs to inquire about the red vomit. I also had a chemo that was brilliant red but never saw a trance of it once it was injected. Be aware of the fact that there is a period of time called the nadir about ten days after chemo that is often the most difficult for a cancer patient. Here is a website with some helpful definitions for the words you will hear the oncologist and nurses use. http://www.stanford.edu/~semurapj/health...
Best regards to your brother and you as the caregiver which is a very difficult task.
I had chemotherapy about 2years ago, and the same happened. Unfortunatly its a nasty treatment to have to go through, but he'll start to feel better after 4days or so...
You could get in tough with the hospital and see if they can prescribe any more anti sicknesses for him like ondancatron or metaclopramide...
Assure him he'll be okay and keeping a clear positive mind helped me keep going too. I hope everything goes well for him x
also, i found taking drugs like tomazzipan helped as they had seditives in them to chill me out
that comes with it some times, but to be sure I would call His Dr. so it will ease your mind, God BLESS YOUR fAMILY and may the Lord heal your Brother in His precious name, I ask of Him. And give Him praise and glory for His healing Amen ...Gods speed
Yes, very possibly so.
Call his doctor's office and make sure they are aware of any side effects he is having. Also, they may have some medication that can help with that.
Best wishes
