HFM is usually caused by the coxsackievirus, one of a group of viruses know an enteroviruses. Most enteroviral infections during pregnancy are mild or asymptomatic to the mother. There's no clear evidence that maternal enteroviral infections cause spontaneous abortions, stillbirths or congenital defects. I suggest that any pregnant mother with HFM speak to her OB/Gyn for the most current updates.
