Can you pass HPV on to your unborn child?

Question:

Answers:
There is contradictory information on this. Years ago, there was an episode on ER where the woman was chastised for not disclosing it before giving birth. I was in the medical field and had never heard of it, so asked one of the OB/Gynes - he said no. Ask your Dr. if it is a concern.
The virus will not transmit before birth, however it is *very* rare, but it has been known to be passed on within the throat of a newborn at birth. The risk of this vertical transmission happening is so low that a c section to prevent it is a higher risk and therefore not recommended to prevent transmission to the baby at birth.
According to the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada, HPV can be passed from mother to child but it is very rare.
