Thyroid cancer?

Question:
This year I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and have had my thyroid removed followed by radioiodine treatment .Can anyone tell me what causes thyroid cancer?. I read somewhere that people treated for acne with ultra violet rays are likely to develop this . In fact I had that treatment as a teenager and wonder if that could be the cause in my case?

Answers:
I hope things turn out ok for you and most deep sympathies.Thyroid cancer is one of the more treatable types of cancer. It is possible that the treatment you has in your teenage may be the reason for this. According to an article I read for school, ultraviolet lights from your treatment are known as a electromagnetic radiation which is one of the main causes for thryroid cancer. If you've been exposed to radiation, you have a greater risk of thyroid cancer, but it may not appear for decades after exposure. Children who received high doses of radiation to treat conditions such as acne, enlarged tonsils and scalp infections between the 1920s and 1950s are at higher risk of thyroid cancer and thyroid nodules than are those who didn't receive these treatments. Also at high risk of thyroid cancer are people who have been exposed to radioactive particles. However genetics may be another cause.thyroid cancer result from a genetic defect — a mutation of a gene that controls cell growth (oncogene) called RET. The mutation is inherited, and each child of a parent with the defect has a 50 percent chance of inheriting it as well.
I also was diagnosed with thyroid cancer last year, at age 33. I was never exposed to ultra violet rays for acne treatment or high levels of radiation. Besides the thyroid cancer I'm very healthy. It's hard to understand that cancer can just happen out of no where, especially when you're young, but it seems that it does.

Hope you're doing well.

No one knows what causes ANY type of cancer. If they did - they would ge a Nobel price and make lots of money. And there would be no more cancer and the health care industry would make no more money. There is a lot of speculation... and hypotheses and some things proven to be against cancer like fruits and veggies and some things are against it like: cigarette smoking. However, Linda McCarthy died of cancer yet she was a health nut vegetarian, yet some people smoke and drink up to their nineties and never get any disease. So, having said that it is important to focus on your present and future in other words: to live well. Look forward and make sure you are healthy and happy NOW. I have Hashimotos Thyroditis - today I just take a pill (Armour) and live my life. I used to think about why I have this - now days - I just try to live a healthy life and go on with my life. Good luck to you and be well!
Im going for my biopsy in a week from monday.

(to try and keep my mind off of it I ask myself why is some thing named THIGH & ROID located in your neck??
I had papillary thyroid cancer. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 2 months before the cancer was diagnosed. I had a goiter/enlarged thyroid, kinda lumpy.

I never had any kind of radiation or uv rays before, except for dental x-rays every few years. I only drink/drank purified water, no tap water, so it's not the water.

My grandmother had hypothyroidism, but she never had cancer. Her father had throat cancer from smoking and I've never smoked.

So...I don't know what causes it. It affects more women than men. Good news is that it's treatable.

good luck to you.
