Sorry if I sound cross. Why on earth would you try to second guess your doctor (who presumably has years of experience) by asking this on this section? What you've described is perfectly normal as he said, so of course it's happened to others. If it hadn't, it would not be normal.
It's probably due to your hormone levels. When you are pregnant, your skin can produce excess pigmentation. Some women develop especially dark skin over their upper lip. This could be why your labia changed colors. Your lips might have also experienced some tearing during the birth and just didn't heal properly.
