Irritable bowel syndrome consists of recurring upper and lower GI symptoms, including variable degrees of abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhea, and abdominal bloating. The cause is unknown, and the pathophysiology is incompletely understood. Diagnosis is clinical. Treatment is symptomatic, consisting of dietary management and drugs, including anticholinergics and agents active at serotonin receptors.
i have cancer and a great website i found for support from people with different conditions is at www.careplace.com. you have to browse thru the groups to find the one for your specific condition. the people there are wonderful and will share their experiences . best wishes
I suffer badly from IBS but mostly when I have an infection, believe it or not but bad teeth can set it off. I have problems with my teeth and that sets it off. Also, constipation is a cause and this alone despite being constipated can cause the bowel so empty itself. Try Coflac tablets from the chemist, as these stop the colon going into spasm. Also, destress yourself as this is another cause. Avoid windy foods and even though you have loose bowels, try and eat more fibre.
eat a better diet
If your question was more specific, then it would be easier to give better answers. I've seen it said that 'IBS' is what is diagnosed when they can't diagnose any other problem with a digestive system. Pay attention to any foods that you notice aggravating the situation, and then look to cut these out.
Manuka honey - if you get the recognised 'UMF' version - is known to help with many digestive problems.
Also there are quite a few IBS help sites on the net, eg below.
Have you discussed with your doctor? They may be able to identify a particular cause or check that it is not anything else.
worth looking into various infectious disease - see below
Colpermin- special peppermint oil is indicated and safe. Unfortunately I have seldom found it useful.
50% of patients with IBS get better with high fibre diet. (unfortunately 50% get worse!)
Antispasmodics can often help the cramps.
Tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptylline in low dose act as smooth muscle relaxants- I have certainly seen these work.
Some patients benefit from psychotherapy.
Good news at least if the diagnosis is confirmed the condition is not harmful though it can be very annoying.
