What are the chances of me getting cancer at 20?
Question:
Answers:
Adolescent and young adult cancers are frequently under reported and until very recently have been a neglected segment of the cancer population. The majority of young adults do not know that they too are at risk of developing cancer . . but not the same type of cancer a child will get or the same type that an older person might get. The medical community has failed to appropriately warn this age group.
Cancer has always been considered rare in this age group, however the sad fact is that young adults rarely find their cancer in an early stage. By the time a young adult goes to a doctor than their cancer is advanced. So, your chances of getting cancer at 20 is considered by the medical community to be low . . but if you are unfortunate enough to get cancer the chances are that by the time you are misdiagnosed and diagnosed, it may be too late.
Young adults, in general, do not get the same types of cancer that an older person has such as colon, lung, or breast cancers. Which is ironic considering all the educational information plastered on television about lung cancers and breast self examination. This type of information, while good for older people, have given the younger adults a false sense of security . . as in "I'm too young to get cancer" which is not true. Cancer can strike any age group.
Unfortunately because teens and young adults are not aware that they are at risk for cancer . . they rarely take the issue seriously. Every teen and young adult should be taught to do a full body examination looking for any unusual lumps or bumps . . just like women are taught to do self breast exams.
Often in teens and young adults the ONLY early symptom will be that odd painless bump or lump that won't go away. Odd Lumps located anywhere on the body should never be ignored, especially if they are growing.
The following types of cancer are often associated with teens and young adults . . notice that the culprit is often with hormones associated with puberty, sex, and growing. Teens and young adults.
1. Lymphoma (cancer of the lymph nodes)
2. Leukemia (cancer of the blood and bone marrow)
3. Germ cell tumors (special cells in a developing embryo that become the testes in males and the ovaries in females)
4. Melanoma (skin cancer)
5. Thyroid cancer (cancer that begins in the thyroid gland, which is located in the front of the neck)
6. Soft tissue sarcoma (cancer in supportive and connective tissue such as fat, muscle, nerves, tendons, joints, blood vessels, and lymph nodes).

That's impossible to answer without knowing what type of cancer and what your risk factors are. Risk factors such as smoking, family history of cancer, etc.
What kind of cancer? Very slim, although, there is really no way to tell. As long as you have a yearly physical and see a doctor anytime you feel uncomfortable with something going on in your body, you should be fine.
