No. This might sound weird, but from my experience and opinion, herpes is one of the better STDs out there.
It doesn't cause death like HIV/AIDS or syphilis can. It doesn't cause cancer like HPV can, which can lead to death. It won't cause a person to become infertile or sterile like untreated syphilis, gonorrhea, or chlamydia. And, it doesn't shorten your life span.
Of course the outbreaks are VERY painful and annoying, but they heal! And, there is NO cure for herpes, but the outbreaks are completely treatable with medication.
BILLIONS of people have cold sores (oral herpes) and MILLIONS have genital herpes though. It's estimated about 75 - 80% of the WORLD has cold sores, while about 25% of the world has genital herpes. It's actually pretty common!

No. What could Herpes possibly do to kill you? Its a virus that causes sores. It may kill your sex life, but alas all you will be stuck with is itchy genitals.. for a lifetime. No shortened life expectancy.

HPV, or the human papilloma virus, is a form of herpes..Genital herpes (warts) or oral herpes (cold sores) will do nothing to diminish your quality of life, a side from so weird sores and itch.
However, on a side note, having either form of herpes puts you at a much, much greater risk for contracting other viruses. The sores burst easily and allow for the transfer of body fluids from a partner to yourself. For example, with out herpes you have a 0.03% chance of catching HIV/AIDS with unprotected vaginal intercourse, however, having herpes (and any out break at the time) increases the risk to over 30%.
The only way herpes can shorten your life is if your oral herpes develops into a rare form of Herpes Encephalitis. While treatable, it is very dangerous.
Outside of that, herpes is nothing more than a skin condition and is rarely considered a health issue.
Herpes is not the same as hpv as a previous poster said, it is hsv and has nothing whatsoever to do with cervical cancer. That is the warts virus not herpes.
