Question:
I have a 5 lb,5 month old maltese who is deathly allergic to bee stings. She was recently stung on the lip and within a few minutes went into anaphylactic shock and almost died before I could get her to the vet. I've been told that she is too small for a junior epipen. Does anyone know any different? Thanks
Answers:
Epipen dosing is based on size. The junior size is for people weighing 33 to 66 pounds. The regular one is for those over 66 pounds.
Your vet should be assisting you in providing medications, if not find another vet. You may be able to carry a vile and a needle to administer a dose of epinephrine. Drugs can be compounded by a licensed pharmacist with a prescription from a vet. Your options are limited by your vet not for the lack of availability.
