Pain is often a signal that your shoes are worn out. Shoes last for about 300 - 500 miles, depending on the shoe (and running surface, etc) or 6 month - 1 year.

Running shoes wear out after you put in 300 miles. Good shoes may take you to 400 miles tops.
You should get new running shoes every 6 months because they deteriorate over time even when your not wearing them.
