The following healthy living recommendations will help you if you’re trying to lose weight, tone up your muscles, have aspirations of building lean muscle mass, are attempting to get a wash board stomach, or just want to feel better:
*1) Burn more calories then you're consuming everyday and measure your results using the following formula: Calories Consumed minus Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) minus Physical Activity minus the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF). A website that explains this formula in more detail and will help you determine how many calories you need to reach or maintain a certain weight is at http://www.primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/library/weight/calsburned.htm
Get an online, desktop, or cell phone diet and fitness calculator. This will allow you to easily calculate the above formula, set goals, log your daily calorie consumption, and register your physical activities.
Set realistic goals for your ideal body weight. Here are two websites that will calculate a suggested body weight:
Adults: http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm
Teens/Children: http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/exercise/weight/bmi.html
It is difficult and unhealthy to lose more than one or two pounds per week. There are 3,500 calories in a pound. If you eat 500 fewer calories per day for a week you will lose one pound. If you burn through exercise 500 more calories per day for a week you will lose one pound.
Here are two articles on how to break through a weight loss plateau:

*2) Eat natural and organic foods found on earth versus something created by a corporation to make money. Eat meals in small portions throughout the day and take a good multi-vitamin supplement.
Do not try fad diets or diet pills. Avoid “High Glycemic Load Carbs” (sugar, pastries, desserts, refined starches such as breads, pasta, refined grains like white rice; high starch vegetables such as potatoes) and drink lots of water. Read this article for more information on high GL Carbs:

*4) Get plenty of sleep. Sleep experts say most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night for optimum performance, health, and safety.
*5) Educate yourself continually on health issues and make a life long commitment to good health. A great free publication is “Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005”. A reputable test you can take to measure your biological age is at http://realage.com
Look at all areas where you can enhance your health. For example, make improvements in the quality of the air you breathe. Review outdoor air quality forecasts where you live and get an indoor air purifier.

Try avoiding typos and using too many elipses.
Let them enjoy what they like and ask them to take a good daily vitamin to assure they get their FDA requirement each day...enjoy your retirement!!!!
They should avoid eating like an 18 year old.
beans they will **** all over the place
animal's fats
Good Lord, you make then sound like they have one foot in the grave. 60 my friend is not an old age person.
My parents are in there 80s and eat what they want. If you are far away from them, you are pretty clueless as to what they need and we know even less. Go spend a few weeks with them before you ask questions like this.
Centrum makes a special formula multivitamin especially for older folks. Other than that, I wouldn't worry about it. If they're healthy in their 60s, they're obviously doing something right.
If the doctor hasn't modified their diets, then they're doing something right. Murphy's law,,,, "If it isn't broken, don't fix it"
tell ur parents to stop taking meat except fish.include different varieties of vegetables in their diet especially green leafy vegetables.Avoid fried and oily foods and also those colas and tell them to do exercise like yoga or else go for a walk every morning.
Please get them to avoid anything that is lite, slim. fat free, etc. Ask them to stay away from sugar sweeteners like sugarine, equal etc... as they all contain a substance called 'aspartame' which is highly toxic. All canola oils are always rancid, so don't use them. Margarine is one molecule away from being plastic, so get them to use butter. Organic is the best food they can consume where they can. Read Elaine Hollingsworth book called Take Control of your Health and Escape the Sickness Industry. Brilliant, you can lend the book through the library as well. Stay away from soy, and soy bi-products, Elaine will explain it better than I.
I'm 66. I stay away from fried foods, fast food and eat low fat. eat lots of fresh fruit and veggies. take a mult vitamin for men. and flax seed oil
Let them eat whatever they want. Let them live their life. But if you really are concerned bout them give them less meat and fat more veggies and supplements.
I'm sure your parents are grateful for your concern however. I don't think they need supplements .At 60+ I feel quite sure they know how to eat and they are able to undrestand nutrition. They have raised a child (you) and I imagine they did quite well. God blees you for caring so much.
Disregard the weight watchers idea. That says and does little to nothing for one's health.
They should be taking calcium citrate 600 mg per day instead of any dairy. Dairy is highly inflammatory.
They should be taking vegetarian sources of protein instead of meat.
They should very much reduce their intake of these vegetables:
*tomatoes (if they want lycopene, get from watermellon instead)
*eggplant
*corn (and I know how much everyone loves corn.) a little might be ok.
*green peppers (red peppers only are safe)
* potatoes (sweet potatoes are fine)
*tobacco
They are very inflammatory.
They should be using Organic Olive Oil instead of all fat sources they may be intaking. Make sure they get rid of any hydrogenated fats of any kind especially margarine. It is disease causing.
If they are thin folk, they may want to add a little safflower oil to their diet.
If they are fat folk, they will definately want to take 2 to 3 tablespoons of Flax Oil everyday. It is rather inexpensive and can be followed up with juice. (taste is iffy) Can be obtained at a local health store.
They will want to read up on and follow through with the recommendations of these quality physicians: http://www.pcrm.org/
If they are having energy problems, take 2000 mg of Vitamin C in the morning. Start off with 500 for 4 days, then 1000 for 3 days, then 1500 for 3 days, and so on. It is relatively inexpensive, and can be obtained at a local pharmacy.
If they are having sleep problems, http://www.totalhealthnutrients.com/ph/catalog-product-detail;catalogproducts,33.html or have a naturopathic physician prescribe Tryptophan. Banned in 1991 for 1 manufacturers malfunction, it is making a come back as a safe sleep aid. It is a precursor to melatonin.
Light walking and jogging is also beneficial for elderly folk.

God Bless you for being so loving towards your folks and thinking the best for them!
