Yes you are right but at first the body will kick into starvation mode where it will try to conserve as much fat as possible. Gradually, as this fat is not being replenished by you eating food, your body will start to eat away it's fat stores before then starting on muscle tissue if you starve yourself for long enough.
Best way to lose it is to eat little and often. That way you are not starving and your body will continue to use up calories as normal. This will stop the fat being stored by your body.

What will happen is your bodies metabolism will start slowing down and your body will attack the muscles first for nutrition. then after time the fat will start to be used, but as soon as you eat again all of that food will go straight to fat because your bodies starving and trying to store food. I found green tea extract very helpful at curbing appetite and increasing energy and metabolism. But pretty much you have to expend more energy then you take in. Sorry for the digression. When you eat a high protein diet , the body stores the protein into fat reserves.(glycogen) It only uses it in an emergency basis. So if the body doesn't have the immediate source of sugar(glucose) available for energy, it will utilize the fat reserves for energy, hence no fat storage, and one loses unwanted weight. Look into the problems doctors experienced when they tried to put weight back onto the prisoners rescued from German Concentration Camps after WWII. Starvation diets are not the way to go. As soon as you stop eating, your brain gets a signal that there is famine in the land. The first thing it tells your body to do then is to store fat.
Ironically, it TAKES fat to BURN fat. Burning fat requires energy, and fat is the energy. If your intake goes down, so does your body's ability to burn fat. Simultaneously, the body will start tapping muscle for its energy. That makes it worse, because muscle maintenance burns a lot of fat calories. The less muscle you have, the less fat you burn.
The best thing is to lay off the carbs, THEY are the real enemy. Carbs facilitate the storage of fat. Load up on protein, and reduce carbs. You don't have to worry about fat too much then.
You also need to hit the weights.
