Firstly you must be aware of the myth of "spot reduction". Contrary to widespread belief, 6-pack abs are basically the result of low bodyfat and not really a result of doing crunches. Even an overweight person usually has a 6-pack hidden under a big layer of fat. In fact, some types of ab work can actually increase waist size by enlarging obliques, the ab muscles on the side which when enlarged cause a "blocky" midsection.
Secondly, crunches and situps are not good calorie burners and as such will not cause much fat loss.
The above mentioned program in reality would burn about as many calories as sprinting around your house a couple times of day. But, it's better than nothing and most people who later end up with an interest in a fit lifestyle do start out with bodyweight exercises.
