I have a question for all you marathon runner out there.......how do you train for a run, like a 5k or a 10k?

Question:
For example: how often should I run to train for an upcoming event? Should weight training be equal as far as training goes? COuld someone give me specifics such as do i do a long distance run one day and maybe a faster shorter run the next? And also, what is a good pace to run? I am currently running about 8 1/2 minute miles for 3 miles. How long would it take to improve this time and how much is a realistic amount to improve? Sorry if this is confusing:)

Answers:
there are many different training programs and schools of thought out there. but generally try to run 4-6 days/week. Do one longer run each week and gradually increase its distance until you can do about 8-10 miles comfortably without walking. There can be a big difference in how you train whether it's for a 10k or 5k. Don't worry about speed training until 3-4 weeks before the race you want to do, and then do speed work 1-2 times a week. This might be a fartlek where you break up your regular run with fast/slow segments. Another thing you can do is repeats where you run at near-max speed for say 1/2 mile, walking/jogging between repeats. Until you actually run a race it's hard to tell how you'll do. If 8:30/mi is somewhat easy for you, you can probably do a little under 8:00/mi in a race if the course is similar terrain to what you're training on. With more training you could improve significantly. With proper training I don't see why you couldn't race a 5k in 7:00/mi. Take a look at some different training programs and try to get a feel for their general training style. Also, don't worry too much about time in your first races. You'll have to get a feel for it first.
