How does one learn about yoga (beginner)?

you could check books out from the library or you could get a gym membership that has yoga classes, or you could buy some yoga books but yogas not the best way to get in shape. you could also try running or swimming, swimming works all of your muscles and gets you a much better workout, also when you swim you don't get hot and sweat which i think is an added bonus
take a yoga class it will help u relax and realease your inner self to know yoga you must understand the purpose first
Any qualified yogi would tell you to find a good class with a qualified teacher who makes you feel comfortable. Yoga is traditionally learned face-to-face.

This can be uncomfortable for many people, myself included.

Personally, I got into yoga using Richard Hittleman's "28 Day Yoga Exercise Plan" after never having practiced yoga before. The progressive program worked well at limbering me up and getting me slowing familiar with some basic poses.

After 1 year, I now find the book lacking, and I use Rodney Yee DVDs and books. I go to classes regularly but not frequently.

Best is, I feel, to take a class. Many Yoga instructors admit beginners in their ongoing classes. When the more advanced students stretch further, the beginners normally don't and that's OK!

You may also find beginner classes. Look in your local newspapers or free papers, especially those on healing, massage etc.

Otherwise you may want to get a Yoga video or DVD for beginners. You can also learn from books with drawings, yet, best and more entertaining, I feel, is a class to start with.
