Crunches can tone the muscle but not reduce the overlaying fat. If you don't get rid of the fat covering the muscle, it doesn't matter how toned you are, it won't show. To get rid of the fat, you have to diet and exercise. To tone the muscles, start with 100 crunches per day and work your way up to 200. The best toning crunches I have found are the decline crunches (where you are laying on a weight bench and your head is lower than your hips. For decline crunches, start with three sets of 8 (yes, I know this sounds easy, but just try it and you will quickly see why I chose such a small number). Work your way up to three sets of 25 to 30 and then start adding weight to the crunches for further toning. Don't overdo it too much or you won't be able to sit up straight the next day.
