try hanging knee and hanging leg raises. You hang off a pullup bar, and just lift your knees/legs. You get a good, strong contraction from those exercises.

You need to do a situp/crunch type excersize being in a position as if you were laying on the side of your bed with your head near the floor. This really spreads out your core area and you can concentrate on your lower abdominals. The very beginning of your cruch will use the lower area when you are in this position. Good luck.
