what do I do about my shin splints?

Question:
I just got shin splints for the third time in my life. The problem this time is that I can't stop training to let myself rest because I've got several huge races coming up. What do I do to keep the pain at bay? Is there a way to recover without taking days off?

Answers:
First off, and please forgive me if you already knew this, shin splints are not a shin bone issue. Shin splints are soreness of the TIBIALIS muscle that works to flex the foot and absorbs much of the impact of running.

Stretching the tibialis by lengthening your instep will alleviate some of your discomfort. So will massage. Ice, on and off, for 15 minute intervals can be effective.

Aleve or any naproxen sodium is the best over the counter anti-inflammatory. That will also help relieve your discomfort.

Finally, it's time for new running shoes! The thing with running shoes is they very often still look just fine when it's time to replace them. The soles compress and they no longer absorb the impact.

You might also consider that there are more appropriate shoes for your running style. If there are running stores near your home, go to one and see if they can help you find shoes that match your style most closely. If they are good, they will ask you to run for them so they can analyze your gait. Running shoes can be very different and sometimes it's like clawing around in the dark.

Good luck!

I can relate. First, ice, then buy some compression socks for your shins, believe me they really work, then take Advil before you run. If you are really really really serious about running and can't stop at all numb your shins with the stuff you buy at walmart.

Cange your running shoes
If your splints are on the insides of your shins you need shoes with more stability

Saucony Grid hurricaine.talk to someon at a "foot Locker"
or some pro shoe shop Whenever you arent training keep ice on them at all times, and take ibuprofen too..that or.just cut your legs off.
