to lose 10lbs for modeling body. pilates or wt training?

Question:
i have always wanted to try to be a swimsuit model. i have about 10 to 15 lbs to lose. im doing 2 hours of cardio a day. but am hesistant about wt training, since i dont want to become muscular. i need to be lean like those supermodels. should i quit wt training and do pilates or yoga instead?

Answers:
First off, let me say this: my advice has nothing to do with health, because there's a big difference between being healthy, and looking like a model. Don't fool yourself, models sacrifice their health to some degree in order to look the way they do. For what you want to do, I wouldn't recommend a balanced workout program, unless you are just ridiculously lucky and a balanced program happens to make you look fantastically lean. Do nothing but stretch your more muscular areas, and try to build muscle where you need more curves.

I think 2 hours of cardio is probably going to make your legs thick, unless you have naturally skinny legs - so keep that in mind if you are trying to reduce your legs - or swim for cardio instead of using a machine. If you are down to your last 10 lbs to lose, you might need some weight training to get it off. Gaining muscle is the only way to increase your base metabolic rate, so if you are already dieting as much as you can, add some weights. For bikini modeling, you need a good butt, so I'd start using weights during squats first, and focus REALLY hard on your butt muscles, try not to even use your leg muscles. Just do weights on the scrawniest parts of your body at first, as much weight as you can lift 10 times in a row, once a week, and see if you gain anything over about 4-5 weeks (I know the experts say it takes 6 weeks, but that's not the case for me - learn your own body). If you start to bulk up, it only takes a couple weeks to revert, so experiment!

For a flat stomach and over-all toning without putting on muscle, pilates is AWESOME! Try it. Yoga is great too, but if you need to flatten your stomach, it will not work as well as pilates.

When I have a special occasion coming where I want to look my leanest (as you would for a photo shoot), I do not work out for about 4-5 days before hand, eat much less than usual (just enough to sustain energy levels), eat no carbs (this reduces facial "puffiness" and tummy bloating), take a fiber supplement, drink 2 gallons of water a day, and get tons of sleep. That usually takes off 3-4 more pounds, mostly of water. It comes right back when I go back onto my usual eating and workout schedule. You shouldn't do this too often though, obviously!

(added after seeing some other answers) PS I know the experts say light weights with many repetitions for lean muscles. Again, learn your own body: my muscles get grossly defined and I put on weight if I do light weights with many reps - heavy weights once a week, low reps, get me hard sleek muscles that "disappear" unless I am flexing them on purpose - perfect for modeling.

Other Answers:
pilates will probably do it, from what i hear. i'm a yoga fan myself.

please be aware that two hours of cardio a day may be a little much. if you're pushing yourself and not eating enough, it can cause a weight loss plateau.

go slowly.
If you start weight training you will gain weight beause you will be building muscele which weighs more then fat. Just work out for one week and watch what you eat you loose 10 lbs your first week anyway. Its called water weight.
YOU SHOULD TRY REPITITIONS WITH WEIGHT ALSO..YOU CAN DO ALL THOSE THINGS YOUR WANTING TO DO AND STAY LEAN ITS ALL ABOUT THE MOVEMENTS YOUR DOINGgood luck
Do both - but remember the secret to weight loss:
Calories burned >> Calories Consumed!
Yoga & pilates are balance and toning the good be good in comination the your wt training because you still want some muscle defintion. Talk to you gym and see what the suggest.
Yoga is good!
Hi Jeena!

Without know the specifics about your situation, I would say your intuition is correct. While weight training puts on little size for females, it can thicken you a little giving you more of an athletic vs. model look. Pilates and Yoga are designed for dances for toning core muscles and building long, lean muscle tissue. I would do as you suggested for best results.

Good luck with your diet and fitness goals!

i reckon swimming: you'd be suprised. try swimming a mile a day - not as much as you'd think, i mean you're probably fairly fit anyway, and i'm 99 k and not all muscle and i can do it easy - it'll probably take about an hour or something.
it'll accent your shape in a lush kinda way, and smooth out your whole body - lean is the word you used. plus, ideal for modelling swim wear if you are a swimmer!
and obviously pilates and yoga will help, but i reckon less pound loss will occur. you'll just get fitter and more bendy. :D
you should always do mostly cardio. Maybe one or two days of weight training a week but go for many repititions of light weights rather than few of heavy weights. Pilates or yoga would be a great supplement to this too. If you're doing 2 hours of cardio every day, I would cut that down to 5 days a week and slip in a day or two with pilates or weight training. you need about one rest day each week for your body to recover too.
For toning the body, and not building too much muscle you will need to complete 15-25 reps of whichever exercises you choose to perform. It is only heavy weights for low reps which would cause you to grow bigger muscles. A combination of pilates with targeted weight training would heed results quickly for you. Although I would reduce your cardio, and make sure all cardio is done in the morning before breakfast for maximum results.
I think most models look like crap. they are so skinny they look very unhealthy. Many of the have eating disorders and are drug users. They are not healthy.

Ok, enough of my opinion and here are the facts:

HERE ARE THE BASICS:

1. you lose weight by consuming fewer Calories than you burn
2. you gain weight by consuming more Calories than you burn.
3. you should be concerned with losing FAT, not weight. There are 3500 Calories/Lbs of fat. To lost one pound of fat/week you have to burn 3500 Calories/week more than you consumed. there are 2500 Calories in a pound of muscle.
4. You should be more concerned with your percent body fat, not your weight.
5. the best, most effective way or burning fat is by combining weight-training and cardio exercise. The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism will be. You will burn more calories all day long, including while you sleep. A health body fat percentage for males is 7-18%, females 18-24% (approximate numbers).
6. you should eat 6-8 small meals each day - this will prevent you from eating 3 large meal which will slow your metabolism while your body works to digest the large quantity of food.

As a general rule of thumb, you should be weight-training 3-4 times per week and performing cardio 3-5 times per week.

Consider hiring a personal trainer (ISSA certified) and a nutritionist. The money spent on these services is worth more than spending money on pills and potions.
Pilates focuses on the underlying core muscles of the torso so it will help posture as well as toning and is fantastic for the abdominal region. It's a great approach and should meet your requirements quite well.

There are several different schools of Pilates, with different emphases. I like one called Yogalates that combines the movement of Yoga with the core strength focus of Pilates. Always best to start with a class so the trainer can give you feedback, but also check out DVDs and videos from the library to find what suits you.

Pilates does increase muscle mass, with all of those benefits. I'm guessing that it's the bulk of weight-trained muscles that you're wanting to avoid, rather than muscles per se. More repetitions with lighter weights is the way to do that. Resistance and/or free weight work in Pilates is excellent.
Remember that actress in Terminater that played Sara Connors? She got that figure with weight traing (lifting). It can easily make a woman thin. To get muscles you would have to train many hours a week for a while. It is very difficult to to do.

This site has more info on that plus a secret trick that models and dancers use before an event to flatten tummy. Then this takes it a step furthur to actually lose more weight around belly area so you can have a much smaller waist. Plus it is loaded with powerful weight loss strategies. Only for models and future models to see. Others-- do not look at this.
