stretch marks usually occur with rapid growth..the skin cannot stretch to accomodate the growth and so you get small seperations in the skin, which fill with scar tissue (thus making the white 'stretch marks' you see).
Some people are more suseptible than others to getting them depending on your skin type and other genetic factors. The best way to prevent them is to take away the cause (ie rapid growth or weight gain)..some doctors will also suggest keeping the skin lubricated..some suggest Vit E lotion.
