Looking for advice on gettin in shape?

Question:
I admit it Im majorly overweight. (about 70 lbs by the index) I am interested in trying to lose some weight and am on a low calorie diet but to be honest im not sure what kind of exercise program I should undertake. It was suggested to start with low impact cardio kinda stuff since I mean Im not capable of running long distance or anything like that. And I am way too self conscious to try a gym. Im more than willing to purchase anything I need for my home use. Any ideas?

Answers:
Start slow and work your way up.

Don't be self conscious about joining the gym. People are their to work on their own bodies. It is doubtful that anybody will give yours more than a passing second thought. You might get more support than you realize. Chances are you might run into some folks that were once as overweight as you are now to give you inspiration.

True story: I go to a gym several times a week. There was a rather large fellow that seemed to always be there when I was. At first my thought was not "who is that huge guy over there", but rather "good for him!". It gets better... After several weeks we found ourselves next to each other on the elliptical ski machines and began talking. It turns out that as large as he was then, he had been coming to the gym regularly for over a year and had lost 160 lbs!. Kind of made me feel like a wuss for whining about that 20 lbs. I'm trying to get rid of....

Get a good pair of tennis shoes and go to the gym!!!

walk walk walk walk walk. walking is an amazingly effective way to lose weight.
Try yoga thats really good or some cardio read some tips on them on this site
do not count calories!!!! eat 6 meals a day. No carbs an hour before bed. Fiber in the morning. Protein each meal.
Get a regular treadmill.

You can start with brisk walks and take it from there.
Well first of all, low calorie meals sometimes just don't do it. Sure they can make you thin, but if you want real muscle, try loads of veggies and lean protein like grilled chicken. Biking is a really good way to tone your legs without getting too tired, and swimming is also excellent for a whole body workout. I think they have some swimming cardio/fitness programs at most sports clubs. A gym membership would make things a lot easier, but only invest in one if you know that you're going to be motivated to go. Otherwise it's just a waste of money!! Good luck.
Hi there!

The most important part of losing weight is controlling the diet. I would consume no more than 2000 calories/day and try and stay active. You don't have to wkt at a club, just go for walks or shopping, bike rides, play sports, etc.

If after doing this for a week or two you don't notice any change, pull down you diet another 250 calories until you start to see the needle move.

This should work for you if you adhere to the calorie control I suggested.

Good luck with your diet and fitness goals!

Well I lost 30 lbs a year ago and have managed to keep it off (for the first time of my yoyo dieting)...this is what i did.

1. Joined weight watchers to learn about good food and bad food. I joined the program and went to meetings for about a month so i could learn the program really well then did it on my own so i didnt have to continue to pay the weekly dues.

2. Began walking thirty minutes a day 5 days a week. This is the biggie...You have to incorporate exercise otherwise you will not lose weight. I later joined a gym which only allows you to try different cardio machines.

3. Purchased a "ball" to work on my core. I enjoy it. I do it in front of my TV when Im bored....plus it makes doing ab work so much easier.

Good luck !
Walking 10,000 steps a day really does help. I do it five days a week. It's free and fun. Here are some tips I found on a walking web site
There are many ways to increase your daily steps. Use your imagination and come up with your own list:
Take a walk with your spouse, child, or friend
Walk the dog
Use the stairs instead of the elevator
Park farther from the store
Better yet, walk to the store
Get up to change the channel
Window shop
Plan a walking meeting
Walk over to visit a neighbor
Get outside to walk around the garden or do a little weeding

Tricks to losing weight

Think you have to do something really radical and punishing to lose weight and keep it off? Just the opposite is true! It's actually the small, simple changes you make that have the most dramatic and lasting results. I know this firsthand, having tried every diet on earth and yo-yoed for years before discovering that weight loss doesn't have to be grueling, depressing or discouraging. It can be easy, fun, painless and permanent.

To lose 1 pound, you have to create a deficit of 3,500 calories. By incorporating easy ways to cut or avoid 250-500 calories a day, you can lose 1/2-1 pound a week, or 26-52 pounds a year.

Following are 15 tips for losing 3-80 pounds a year by making one small change in your diet. We've also included five tips for blasting those 3-6 holiday pounds in eight weeks before they become permanent, plus four scrumptious "batch" recipes (three from world-famous chefs) that supply several tasty, lowfat meals each. Whip them up on weekends for a week's worth of healthy, hassle-free eating.

Remember that the more consistently you follow these tips, the more weight you'll lose, even when other eating and exercise habits stay the same. See the "Weight-Loss Payoff" logo (WP) for a range of how many pounds you can lose in a year. The range reflects the variation in how often you incorporate tips into your regular diet.

Here's some low calorie snacks they are 100 calories
1 - 1/2 cup of sugar-free gelatin, any flavor, and two Tablespoons of low-fat Cool Whip.

2 - 15 chocolate-covered raisins.

3 - Stir 2 teaspoons of Hershey's chocolate syrup into a cup of coffee for Café Mocha.

4 - Tea - Russian style: Stir in 2 teaspoons of strawberry jam.

5 - 1/4 cup of fat-free Ranch dressing and 1 cup of mixed fresh veggies such as jicama, red bell pepper, celery, carrot sticks and cherry tomatoes.

6 - 6 saltine crackers and 2 teaspoons of peanut butter.

7- 1/2 cup of fat free ice cream.

8 - A luscious parfait: 1/2 c. of low-fat pudding layered into a parfait glass alternating with two crumbled vanilla wafers and a dollop of Cool Whip gracing the top.

9 - A wonderfully filling half sandwich made of 1 slice reduced-calorie bread, a thin layer of mustard, 2 teaspoons of apple sauce and 1 slice of deli-style thin-sliced turkey. Add lettuce and voila!

10 - Try another sandwich idea: 1 slice of reduced-calorie bread, 1/2 Tablespoon of peanut butter and 1 Tablespoon of fat-free raspberry vinegarette dressing.

11 - Over a small baked potato, spoon 1/2 cup of salsa and 2 Tablespoons of non-fat sour cream.

12 - I really like this one: one rice cake thinly spread with fat-free sour cream and sprinkled with 1 Tablespoon of crumbled blue cheese.

13 - Place a marshmallow on top of a graham cracker and microwave until gooey. Drizzle with a teaspoon of Hershey's chocolate syrup.

14 - Cut half an apple into slices and spread with 2 teaspoons of peanut butter.

15 - 1/2 cup of applesauce and 1 piece of toast cut into four sticks for dunking.

16 - Freeze 1/2 cup of orange juice and eat with a spoon. Nice little sorbet!

18 - an 8 oz. low-fat yogurt or a small container of low-fat pudding.

19 - 1 slice of reduced calorie bread spread with 1/4 cup low-fat cottage cheese mixed with 2 Tablespoons of applesauce and sprinkled with cinnamon. Especially good warmed in the microwave.

20 - a cup of coffee and a small biscotti

I'm in the process of losing weight too. It's not easy, but you CAN do it! Good luck to you!
Go to personally fit.com where you can design online programs that you could perform from your own home. You can do this either with an online personal trainer assigned to you or without. I use it without a trainer, since i'm a trainer myself. I do exercises from home daily, like stretching, push-ups, sit-ups, walking, ect. using only my body weight. You could do the same and experience tremendous results.

Enjoy your results,

adamray
