i have another question about strength training?

ok i work out 3 days a week mostly on gym quality machines and i am now mixing a little free weights in with it. i am not really interested in growing huge muscles, just a little and i wanna tone out really well. i have heard you have to fail out your muscles to do any good, but i find that hard to believe. what i am comfortable with is 2 sets of 10 to where i am getting tired after the 2nd set. and i do a 3rd set of 6 to 8 with heavier weight to almost failure, my quesion is do you think this is adequate? keep in mind that i dont have alot of time to go to the gym so i have to do full body each time i go.

My suggestion is to do one set at your normal starting point (the most weight you can do at about 10 reps). Then go up in weight to failure (maybe 5 reps). And because you're really just looking to get toned, drop weight down below your starting point and do a burnout. This means you do maybe 15 or more reps on lower weight until your arms burn and you cant do anymore. This is the philosophy people use to do Abs, because obviously people can do more than just 10 situps and it tones their stomach. This applies for the rest of the body too.
