How to choose a multivitamin?

Solotron sold by GNC, there is an iron free formula that seems to work the best. About $6 for 3 months and I've taken it for years, far better than Centrum. It is a higher potency with no herbs thrown in. Covers my C and zinc needed for the cold season. My Bs for times of stress, like finals or work. Enough antioxidants so I feel like I am taking something that is balanced properly. That way I am not spending a fortune on other pills I may need.
Vitamins that say 100% of the daily value all the way down the list of ingredients aren't balanced. You need so much selenium to get the E to enhance how those two vitamins respond and work in your body. There are a few others that are set up the same way like magnesium potassium and calcium all work at a certain balance.
Good luck and watch those sales people at GNC, you don't need that gold card they will try to sell you. Look in the Sunday paper, you can always find the same 20% discount that the card gets you. Buy your bottle and run!
*edit There are coatings on some vitamins. Mostly called 'enteric coating' your intestines absorb a huge amount of nutrients after your stomach has had a shot at them. The enteric coating takes advantage of this by letting some nutrients that can upset your stomach, like fish oils, to absorb later on in digestion where there isn't a chance of you burping up that fishy taste...so unfortunately the putting the pill in a glass of water to see if it disolves in an hour won't work. Water is also not the same acidity as your stomach, go for vinegar. You'll also need to slosh it around a bit for that hour. No one sits still after eating so the motion is needed to simulate your bodys movement.
Yes I did this test to this pill (it is one of the uncoated ones) and yes with vinegar it is mostly gone. Got to figure the rest is picked up in the rest of your bodies gastrointestinal track.

Check the small print for the daily needed amount. If you also eat properly and varied, about half your daily requirement in pills is plenty.
Look for one that is cheap with the minimum daily requirement by the body. e.g. Vit C, your body only needs about 30-50 mg. Anything above that is discharge by the body.
Ask your local Pharmacist which one would be good for you. There are a few different kinds like for adults over 50 or under 30 etc.
This is very difficult to do without having a pretty vast knowledge of what's in your present diet and what the symptoms of deficiency are.Centrum is a pretty good multi that most doctors will reccomend.I use the series from Now Foods and get them from DPS Nutrition .net for a very good price.
a multivitamin is very important. you want one that is uncapsulated. Ones that come coated like a vitamin usually pass through your body and do little good. The ones you need dont taste as good though, but they disolve in the stomach. other than that look for a vitamin that fits you needs dealing with you age and sex. if you want to work out a lot then optimum makes a great line of vitamins. you can find those and others just like it at places like
www.vigorousliving.com/opnuvia...
It depends on what your body needs.
all the pharmacies have all kind of vitamins and you have to go to doctor to check what kind of vitamins you might need.
if your body doesn't need any vitamins you could have the Miltie vitamins with extra zinc, but you have to do some exercises because it is going to make you eat so much.
fruits have a multivitamins and it is nature.
good luck
My Dr. told me to get one and put it in a glass of warm water and if in a half an hour it has dissolved you know its doing the job.. if not your not getting anything out of it
Vitamins are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, so there is no government agency that guarantees that you are actually receiving what is on the label. However, the health food industry has set up an independent organization that tests and certifies certain brands of vitamins.
To the best of my knowledge, Centrum and One-A-Day, and other brands one might find at the drug store or grocery store, do not participate. I always buy my vitamins at the health food store. Whole Foods or Wild Oats, or a place like that. I do not go to GNC, as they do not participate either.
Vitamins you purchase at the drug store or grocery store typically do not provide everything you need, even as shown on the label, tending to lean heavily towards those ingredients that are cheaper, and light on the expensive items. It is similar to dog food manufacturers that put hair in dog food - it raises the protein content, but it is not digestible protein, so although the label may be correct as to the percentage of protein, the dog does not get the benefit. It is the same with vitamins. Even if it really does have exactly what the label says, it may not be assimilated in the body.
You should take note that most large commercial companies base the content of their product on the recommended daily allowance set up by the government. Most independent health organizations feel that the recommendations are inadequate. While a well-known commercial vitamin may provide 100% of the RDA, a multivitamin from the health food store may contain 1500% of the RDA for the same ingredient.
Unless you want to do the research on your eating habits, health and lifestyle to determine the amounts you need as an individual, it is probably best to go to a health food store and get the most complete supplement you can. Reputable health food stores have knowledgeable associates who can help you decide on a full-spectrum multi-vitamin with industry certification. Solgar, Solaray, Spectro, Bluebonnet, Country Life, and the store brands of Whole Foods and Wild Oats are all good choices. There are others that are also good, I just can't think of all the names right now.
If you have an old bottle of Centrum around, you might want to compare the ingredients when you get home. You might find it interesting.
