can you actually be healthy being a vegetarian?

Question:

Answers:
it is hard to be healthy by restricting any major food groups from your diet. likewise it is hard to be healthy by eating any food group in excess. .hard, but not impossible.

vegetarians and vegans tend to have low iron levels which can result in anemia. people who bleed frequently (donating blood, menstruating, have bleeding disorders, etc) are prone to anemia anyway and it can be a hard cycle to break out of. pregnant women are at especially high risk due to the fetus taking iron from the mother. taking iron supplements can help a lot if someone isn't willing to eat red meat (best source is organ meat, like liver), the trick is getting the right dose. too much will make you nauseous, very high amounts can kill you. your doctor can help you monitor these levels.

a common misconception is that vegetarians don't get enough protein. this couldn't be further from the truth. all living organisms have protein, carbohydrates, and fats (oils) in varying amounts. lacto-ovo vegetarians get plenty of protein from eating milk products, egg products, and legumes such as beans and nuts. vegans tend to be very conscientious about getting protein from plant sources. soy protein (found in tofu, veggie burgers, soy milk, etc) is a very healthful protein. fruits are a good source of simple carbohydrates, while potatoes, rice, and other starchy foods contain more complex carbohydrates (a more long-lasting energy source). healthful oils/fats can be found in flax seed, avocado, and olives, among other things.

the point is to eat a good variety, while not overdoing any food group.

Other Answers:
not exactly. you have less choices of getting your protein
it's possible! and some vegetarians eat fish, too.
I don't think so. I know this girl. she vegeterian, 21 years old and looks 12. She has dark circles under her eyes and does not look healthy.

You could be in excellent health being a vegetarian. Better health than most people who eat too much animal protein and practically nothing for fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

But you need to ensure you eat enough of what gives you all the required vitamins and minerals; so you have to fuss a lot with designing your daily diet.
Yes, perfectly healthy. The main thing vegetarians lack in their diets is protein. However, it is in peanuts and many other things. So most vegetarians are healthy and actually live longer than the majority of people.
Yes. Very easy if you eat dairy, takes a bit more planning if you are vegan. The human body does need protein in certain combinations of amino acids. The vegan diet needs a bit of thought to get those combinations, but overall, I think a vegetarian diet is healthier than a meat-based diet. How many fat vegetarians do you know?
Yes you can..protein comes in many forms not just meats. beans & soy products.
