How many sit-ups should I do a day?

Most of the above advice is quite wrong, some of which would be quite dangerous.
If it's your chest and abdominal area that you want to make more muscular and less fatty, you shouldn't be doing sit-ups; this is an enormous misconception, shared by many people. You should be doing crunches.
Sit-ups focus on the muscles of the back, with very little emphasis on the chest and abs. It is true that they do affect those areas, but the change is slight, and therefore sit-ups are ineffective for that purpose.
I would say that, with crunches, 3 sets of 24 reps, twice daily, would be sufficient for your purposes. That is, 24 crunches, a small break, then 24 again, another short break, and another 24. Again, do this twice daily. It shouldn't take more than 30 minutes. You should see results fairly quickly!
If you are unfamiliar with crunches:
1. Lie flat on your back and place your calves on a flat bench
seat. Your hamstrings should be perpendicular to the floor.
2. Place your hands behind your head with fingers interlaced
together.
3. Perform the following movements simultaneously:
a. Pull your hips from the floor using your lower
abdominal muscles.
b. Raise your shoulders and back from the floor using
your upper abdominal muscles
c. Force your shoulders in moving them toward your hips
d. exhale hard
4. Hold the contracted position for a slow count of 1-3
seconds.
5. Repeat.
Don't forget to warm up first! Stretch first is important as well.
I hope that helps, and wish you all the best.

40-50
That's too much. U will hurt urself. Start off with 10 a day & add 5 more each week. I need 2 do situps myself.
I heard 200 is the golden number, however, it is almost purely diet that will show your abs.
jogging
I do 300 a day,and never been hurt
for me I do about 50 a day five times a week although for you, you should start at about 20 per day seven times a week. by week two do the 50 reps. your tummy should be flat in a month if you have moderate extra belly. it worked for me
If you are trying to achieve a flat tummy you must do aerobic exercises with your sit ups. Trying speed walking, running for 30 min. 5 days a week. You are doing great though keep it up.
You'll be ok
Honestly, You should probably do crunches. They are easier on your back and hips then sit ups. But the number increase shouldnt hurt.
will i dont think u should do a hundred maybe u should do like 25 to 30 sit-ups like maybe every 30 minutes or everyhour
you can do too much, if you started out at 100 than add 5 more at a time you have to gradually build yourself up to what your comfortable with but personally I only do about 50 a day added with my other training, round out you workouts well though don't do only one area workout many.
what you are doing is great, especially since working your abs out and gaining muscle will greatly increase your metabolism as well, that with diet and you should slowly start to see results...keep it up!....however maybe only add ten a week...depending on how comfortable it is.
It will do your tummy better if you vary your exercise. Do 50 sit-ups then do 50 twisting crunches (while laying your back, move your legs like your riding a bicycle, then touch your left elbow to your right knee, then your right elbow to your left knee - that counts as 1. Do 49 more). Then take a short break to catch your breath, and then repeat. It should take you 2-3 weeks to get your muscle tone up and have a flat tummy.

All the sit-ups in the world won't get the flab off anyone's midsection. If you want a defined core you need to get the fat off, and that means diet and exercise. The two best exercises for fat loss are (1) circuit training with light weights, and (2) sprint drills -- 30 second sprint, 60-90 second walk/jog, repeat 8-12 times. As for diet, you know about the normal "offenders" like fast food, junk food, refined flour/sugar, but Public Enemy Number One is high fructose corn syrup. Soft drinks and juices are LOADED with it, and you'll find it just about everywhere. Keep that and trans fat (partially or fully hydrogenated oils) to a minimum or cut them out altogether. After that, take a common-sense approach -- lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads/cereals/pasta, lowfat dairy products, and lean meats (fish and poultry are best). Want a natural appetite suppressant? Take a tablespoonful of olive oil before meals (don't worry, olive oil is one of the best things on the planet for you). And try to eat lots of fiber -- it fills you up and helps get the "bad" fat out of your system.
I would reccomend about 5 minutes a day. That is what I do. To learn more, you can visit the link below for info on which crunches are best and which ones are worst!:)

P.S. I do about 70 in the morning and 127 in the evening. I believe this totals out to about 5 minutes, but then again, I may have to re-time myself, because I have to rest every now and then! I also do other exercise, eat healthy, and drink lots of water, like you said. The recommended amount of sleep is 8 hours, although, I go over that=)~
umm, dont be sorry of how you look. everyone is chubby in their own way. do as many as you like, heck i dont care how you look!
I think you're doing all the right things.
In addition to what you're already doing, also think about getting other forms of exercise.
Keep doing the sit ups but also do other forms of cardiovascular and weight training -- also play individual and/or team sports, which will improve your fitness as well as be lots of fun.
These will also flatten your tummy and tone up the rest of your body.
Don't go too heavy on the weights -- unless you want to beef up like Schwarzenegger, which I'm sure you probably don't.
