You can get huge from just dumbell work, as long as you are doing the right exercises and repetitions. 3 reps is to low for mass building, those are strength building reps, you want to use a little bit lighter weights and get your reps up to 5-8 or 8-11.
That burn is normal, it is from lactic acid buildup, that is a good thing it means you are training hard enough.

Yes dumbells are good enough. For some excellent info check out Bill Phillips book Body For Life and his website bodyforlife.com. The heavier the dumbbell the more muscle mass you gain. If you do more reps then your muscles would get a better shape. If you want to build your torso Lats and Chest exercises must be done.
