i suffer from irritable bowel syndrome, does anyone else and can you list some food that cause you problems!?

Question:
I cant pin-point what foods are causing me severe cramps! i know red meat, spices, alcohol and prawn cocktail crisps do cause me pain. help please!!

Answers:
Alot of dairy products aggravate the condition, infact an intolerance to milk often mimics IBS. If you're lacking the lactose enzyme (which is essential to break down the lactose) then the symptoms are bloating, flatulence, cramps, loose bowels, irritibility, headaches. My mother thought she had IBS until it was discovered it was lactose intolerance. When she stopped taking milk her condition was vastly improved. Oddly enough she can eat cheddar cheese without any problems, it's only sauces made with milk, in cereals, tea and coffee that the milk is a no-no. If you really do have IBS then it's still a good idea to cut back on dairy for those reasons.

yep i got it and everything that contains alot of wheat upsets me bread cakes etc
try to cut out dairy products as most have some kind of bacteria that may develop in your gut
My sister suffers from ibs she said foods that cause the problem for her are mushrooms, cheese and pasta, not everyone suffer from the same food i think it depends on individual.i suggest you make a list of food you eat then see which food causes the problem and avoid them food, peppermint tea or aloe vera juice suppose to be helpful.
Hi, I have IBS and IBD (inflammatory bowel disease called Crohns disease). I know what you mean about the cocktail crisps, spicy food, alcohol, not good, but I can tollerate it sometimes too. I find things containing wheat sometimes play my stomach up, also dairy too. I think for me its mainly alcohol, dairy and spices. Its good that you realise what causes your stomach to hurt so you can avoid those certain foods. Try keeping a food diary for a month, write everything you eat daily on it, and note when you have pain, bloating etc and the times you get it, then you can work out for definate what foods cause you problems. With my condition I can sometimes eat certain things, then other times I cant eat the same thing, then at times anything I eat doesnt agree with me. I hope you have success anyway.
Sugar brings mine on. I can eat things containing dextrose, but sucrose, fructose and maltose cause me problems. Drinking whisky brings relief, but that can have its own problems!
anythink wheat based,cream,mushrooms,sauses
it not just foods drinking tea coffee and alcohol and stress are the main things if your blooted try peppermint to releses wind and eat a good fibra diet if your bunged up
I found a good description on Wikipedia.

Also found a website which offers help and support to sufferers, and another with leaflets.

It would also be worth asking your GP to help you work out what you are allergic to.

Hope they help relieve your suffering!
Yup, i got it. Milk products, and lettuce. Greasy foods too, but I stay away from the unhealthy stuff.

Regards,
Biggest one for me is a combination of yeast and wheat so basically bread. I am ok with wholemeal pasta however (no yeast) as it seems to be both that sets me off. I also have to avoid red meat - much as I love it the colon spasms after are just not worth it! Spices don't make any difference to me at all strangely but raw onion does! Keep a food diary and monitor how your IBS is throughout each day. That will help you pinpoint what foods are triggering attacks for you. Then cut them out of your diet one at a time for a couple of weeks. Re-introduce it again (as your tolerance is reduced to that food) and see what happens. If you are ok, then that food is not the culprit. If you get an attack then it is.
I have found that switching to wholemeal pasta etc makes a big difference to the constipation, as does cutting out fizzy drinks (regardless of diet/normal etc - it's the fizz that is bad) and drinking plenty of water has also reduced my symptoms enormously.
try a gluten free diet, i have ibs and it really helps. Also you can get help from doc oin those really awful days. especially for bloatedness and constipation
