Invest in an exercise ball. They are great for sit ups and no back pain. Plus you can do other exercises and all of them use the core. They actually don't cost that much. I bought mine for like $12. And you can get a matt for like $20 or just use a firm rug. Good luck.

Not necessarily, but it would help if you placed a cushion beneath your bottom so that it won't hurt.

I used to do about 300 sit ups a day when i was training at my Aikido dojo, and i found that the cushion is the best method to avoid hurting yourself.
100 per day for 30 days causes pain even if u do i correctly.
I have found that one does not have to go wild with situps.It works just as well if you put your hands up at your temples and just lift yourself halfway from the floor.

You didn't do anything wrong you just perhaps over did it a bit.
