Obesity and Stupidity?

Question:
My best friend was telling me how she hated fat people. She told me that she thinks they're stupid for being fat and complaining about it without doing anything and they're completely able to loose weight. I defended them, though. I thought that it was horrible to insult them like that.

Then I see obese people buying pills and throwing up and not eating... and I think. They're cheating. Those of us who are of better build or even if you're not buff or anything but just average all watch what we eat and excercise to stay fit. Then the larger people just cheat their way out.

What's your guys'/gals' opinion? Are obese people worth being mad at? Should we be disgusted or should science continue to move towards easier and easier ways of loosing weight?

Answers:
For the large part of the population, if they live long enough(including your friend) they will probably find out how difficult it is to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight. Obese people are sad and have a difficult life. Good for you, talking to your friend about such cruelty.

It's not a job for science to find easy ways for us to lose weight after we have stuffed ourselves with fatty, unhealthy foods, lots of junk foods and soda; and then we lie around watching TV and gaming and using the computer. We need education and understanding of how we got where we are now. I am horrified at all of the young children and teens in my family and children of friends who eat nothing but fast foods. Many don't want anything but fries or chicken strips. We've had a battle all summer with visiting relatives children. They have their lists of fast food places and their favorites on the menu at each place. No fruit, veggies, or whole grains or lean meats. Then they lie around all day, watching TV. If we get them out to the pool, there's no real swimming. Well. I guess that question rattled my cage!

Other Answers:
its really none of our business if people are fat or thin, it shouldn't affect you one bit. unless your fat.........
i think if there is a definite medical reason for why the person is overweight i can be symphathetic. but on the other hand the extremely large people do somewhat disgust me just because its like have a little self control ya know. and the worst thing is when a lot of them are always saying i need to lose weight.but never even try.
Don't be mad at them, they don't know any better. They may think they do, but they are still fat-they don't. Just know that healthiest and safest way to weight loss will always be natural-by eating healthy AND exercising.
I think science should not help them their might be some thing in thoughts pills that might hurt them later on. I also think that they are cheating their why out of rely being healthy and fit. Because in the end they will be week thin people if they don't work out and stuff. I can under stand if they can barley move. Then give them the pill. But once they can movie let them work out on their own or get a trainer to help them.
how old is your friend?
Many people don't loss their weight to hide what they are.
It's better to help than to critisis.
Sometimes fat people cant help it because its genetic. But those other people have no excuse. I actually have a friend who complains about being fat, but does nothing about it. The ones that are cheating themselves must think its easy or something to lose wieght. It doesnt just come in a pill! It is hard though to make that life style change to be fit and healthy. But once its changed its all good. But then some people dont mind being fat. Even though its so unhealthy. I dont think anyone should be mad at them. Maybe annoyed, but not mad. And I think if they are going to complain about themselves, they need to do something about it because only they can change themselves. I dont think pills and diets are the answer to losing weight either. Eating healthy and exercising is the answer. And lots of water.
We shouldn't hate fat people though virtually all of them are fat because of ignorance and laziness. Fat people have to be jolly or have some compensating quality to make people like them. The problem with fat and many other problems is people don't think for themselves. They get molded by the advertising media pushing low fat jelly donuts. The need to go to a gym and weight watchers, but they don't because they don't think about it until their health is ruined and it is hopeless. I don't hate fat people and I still am friends with my college roomate who was and is fat. He's just too lazy to do anything about it.
No, we have absolutely no reason to be mad at them. At the end of the day, we do not know their situation and it is not for us to judge anyone, but ourselves.

Some overweight people may have certain issues with food that stem from childhood that other people don't, such as always being served large portions by their parents and being allowed too much junk food. It's very difficult to change old habits, without being really motivated.

It's also believed that some obese people may have trouble knowing when they are full up, as their is a glitch in their brain. So however much they eat, they still do not feel full. They may also have cravings, which are very difficult to control, this is known as binge eating disorder.

Or it could just be away of finding comfort, like some people turn to drink or cigarettes, other's turn to food. They deal with their emotional problems through food, but if they can replace overeating with a more healthy and constructive activities, they may be able to overcome this and lose weight.

I also don't think thin people necessarily work hard as such. They may just be lucky and have a high metabolism, so they can eat ridiculous amount of food and not gain any weight, where as some overweight people may have a very low metabolism and have to be really careful what they eat.

I hope you stick with your views and don't let your friend convince you otherwise.

HTH.
"Then I see obese people buying pills and throwing up and not eating... " That's called an eating disorder. They can't help it. Either that or it's just a stupid person wanting to imitate someone with an ED. And no, it's not healthy. You can die. You suffer serious medical complications and shorten your life.

It's not always the fat person's fault. Believe it or not you can be fat and healthy. It depends on the family history. Some people have a natural weight that's higher than average and it's still healthy for them. Other people suffer from compulsive overeating disorder, which, believe it or not, is an eating disorder. It may be about control in life, like the other eating disorders. Those people need professional help. They can't help it. I think it's utterly ignorant and stupid to hate obese people. Some can't help it; others simply don't care. After all, the value of a human shouldn't be vested in numbers on the scale--it should be in core personalities and such talents.

Some people have hypothyroidism, too. And some maybe disabled and some way and thus inefficiently burn calories. I think we should respect everyone depending on their core value, not face value. Obesity is not stupid; shallowness is.
there are cheaters everywhere. what about models do you think they exerzise and running 5 miles a day to wear skin around there bones. And let people be who they are it dosent matter if someone are fat or thin as long as they are happy
I don't think it is up to us to judge another person based on their weight. Many people who are overweight are very depressed about their condition. The sad thing is that many self-medicate with food. It's a horrible cycle.

It's sad, but true. Many people have a prejudice against overweight people. Perhaps that is because we don't know what it's like to be them or the struggles they are going through. Honestly, I feel sorry for those who have to drag their heavy bodies around day after day. How tiring! But don't you think it's worse that there is such a prejudice towards those who are obese? We don't know if they are suffering from a disease, have a genetic predisposition, are depressed, etc. Honestly, I think part of the problem has to be taken care of mentally. If we fix the weight problem without dealing with the underlying issues, a person is bound to gain weight again! A pill or a stomach stapling surgery won't fix it if a person doesn't learn how to eat right, respect their body and themselves! What do you think?
I found the following article interesting about obesity.
