Can I weight train with a rotator cuff injury (supraspinatus)??

Question:
I suffered a sublaxation (partial dislocation as far as I know) of my right shoulder last September. I'd recovered quite well but it recently "popped" out a little which was v. painful! I'd like to get training again ASAP but I'm not sure if weight training will do more damage than good - any ideas?

Answers:
Yes you can - check with your physio to incorporate resistance training back in your programme at the right time. There are a number of rotator cuff strengthening exercises - start with body weight mobility moves, advance to resistance bands and then to weight bearing with bodyweight, cables and free weights.

But like I said - your physio should be telling you what and when. If you don't have a physio, get one, or at least a good, qualified personal trainer. These things are all about doing the right thing at the right time and at the right pace. If you rush it, you will risk aggravating the problem, if you don't do the exercises, the area will not regain strength and mobility properly.

Whatever you do, don't go to your GP - they're crap at this sort of thing - and don't get exercises of Dave's sister's boyfriend's brother's neighbour who used to be in the army/ read it in a magazine! Do it properly.

are you not in rehabilitation therapy? i'd really avoid those weights, and discuss the matter with a therapist or doctor, if possible.
i done exactly the same m8, and if that partial dislocation becomes full, as did mine, the difference in pain is shocking. You have to do really light weight training to strengthen it, i recomend doing it at home cause you will look like a right puss in the gym. SEe a physio and they will tell you which exercises to do. gud luk m8
I had the same problem.....surgery sorted it out but was very painful and rehab takes about 3 months....good as new now though.
