Does having a baby kill your metabolism?

Question:
I used to be able to eat everything and not gain a lb! I lost all my baby weight in 3wks. When my son was around 4 mos old I began to gain and it has been an endless battle of diets since to get back down. I need to lose 5 pesky lbs to fit in my pants and it is sticking, I excersize, count calories, currently doing atkins and my weight won't budge. Anyone??

Answers:
The hormone changes during pregnancy and the postpartum period are different for everyone. I am 5 months pp and am losing weight well (Less than pre-pregnancy) but I also breastfeed, eat healthy, reasonable portions, and exercise 5-6 days a week. Did you start a new kind of birth control? That can sometimes effect it as well. Keep up with the exercise and healthy eating, it could just take some time-are you eating enough? Not consuming enough calories can actually slow your metabolism. Your best bet may be to log everything you eat and consult a nutritionist. They can help you adjust your diet/exercise regimen to fit your needs best.

Other Answers:
It can cause it to change but there may be other issues at work as well. Keep up with the diet and exercise. Atkins worked great for me (although I don't suggest it as a long-term/permanent way to eat) as well as keeping my calorie intake to no more than 1300/day while on it, and exercising at least 1 hr a day. If not Atkins then do stick with some good/sensible eating plan and keep your calories at a level where you're burning more than you are consuming. Good luck!
Having a baby changes many strange things about your body. Really the only way to lose weight and keep it off is to burn more calories than you take in. Exercise for 20 minutes three times a week and reduce your calorie intake. If you still haven't lost the weight you should see a doctor if it concerns you.
