does very low calorie dieting work?

Question:
im 6' and 180lbs. and i run everyday and burn atleast 700 cal and eat about 1000 cal.

Answers:
Oh GOD no that is not enough! When you don't consume enough calories, your body goes into 'starvation mode'. It burns LESS calories, and instead of burning your fat reserves, it will burn muscle mass, thus slowing down your metabolism even further. In order to lose weight you need (assuming you are male) probably closer to 2000 calories a day, as men burn calories more than women do.

Other Answers:
If you don't have enough calories consumed everyday, your body starts to break down your muscle mass because there is more protein in muscle then there is in fat. As long as you watch your caloric intake and consume more then you burn, you should be ok. But 1000 calories a day is pretty low for you size.

That's not very much. I am 5'2'' at 110 lbs., burn at least 800 through exercise and my gardening job everyday, and eat around 3000 calories per day. When I feel like I need to lose weight, I cut back to 2000.

Though I'm not an expert, I'd say what you're doing is unhealthy; my doctor has told me repeatedly that an active woman should get no less than 1500 calories a day and an active man should get no less than 2000 calories a day, even if he or she is trying to lose weight. Not eating enough and burning that many calories through exercise could result in loss of muscle mass, cardiac arrest, low bone density, deficits in important minerals and/ or vitamins, and severe constipation.

However, everyone's different, and that may just be the way you're built: eating that many calories and exercising the way you do may work for your body. I'd ask your doctor though, just to make sure it's okay.

If you're trying to lose weight: Don't cut back on calories too much, it forces your body into a state of cannibalism. Plus, the sad fact is that those who lose weight really fast due to exreme dieting are 75% more likely to gain it all back once the dieting stops than are those who lost the weight gradually and healthily.

Low-calorie dieting did NOT work for me; I just put the weight right back on once I stopped the dieting. It was also frustrating and painful. What did work for me was a healthy diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds, and low-fat dairy products, as well as a reasonable exercise plan. Good luck!
