Are weight-loss medical procedures worth the risk?
Question:
Answers:
lap band is worth the risk
gastric bypass is not
I think that in most cases the benefits definitely are worth the risks. Especially for severely obese people. It is a last resort for them; without the surgery and weight loss, they'll die relatively soon. So they take the chance.
Personally, the gastric bypass was too big of a risk for me. However I did a lot of research and decided to have Lap Band surgery in November 2004. It was the best decision I ever made.
The Lap Band is much less invasive and much less dangerous. It also has much fewer complications.
With the Lap Band, none of my organs were cut, removed, by-passed etc. A band was simply put around my stomach. And that's one of the other benefits; it' relatively easy to have the band removed (have the surgery reversed).
I know of people who has gastric bypass, and then years later started gaining weight again, so they went and also had a Lap Band put on.
Whatever decision you make, be sure to do a lot of research and know exactly what you're getting into. The Lap Band is just a "tool" to help you lose weight. You still have to do some work to be successful.
Good luck on your journey.
