Is there an online map, like mapquest that will let you map your own roads so you know the distance?

Question:
Looking to map some running routes without having to buy some sort of electronic device to track my distance.

Answers:
Hi, Dan!

I have had success with a web site/application called Gmap Pedometer. According to the developer, it is "a little hack that uses Google's superb mapping application to help record distances traveled during a running or walking workout." Sound like what you're looking for?

Since the site is free, what have you got to lose? Load www.gmap-pedometer.com into your web browser of choice and then enter your address, city and state, or zip code into the "Jump to" box at the top of the screen. The application will load a map and you can record different points and turns to track your route.

Note that the maps don't take into consideration the elevation of your route--so if you're running up and down hills, the calculations for the distance and calories burned will be wonky.

Have fun!
