What food shoud not be eaten with gout?
My boyfriend has gout and I am not sure what foods he should not eat when it is aggravated
Answer:
I used to have a gnarly bad gout attack every 6 months. I have cut back on beans, stayed away from peanuts (or any peanut product), limited shellfish, organ meats, and red meat, and watched alcohol intake. I also limit spinach, cauliflower, and broccoli. So far, it's been a year and a half since the last one. They say elderberry juice (check at the health food store) and cherry extract supplements will help eliminate the gout. Fruits are good to eat, and all other veggies. Dairy products are good. Chicken, fish, and pork are okay. The pain and inflammation is caused by uric acid crystals (which look like spikes when under a 'scope), so anything he can do to prevent them from forming, and to eliminate the uric acid before the crystals form, will help. Lots of water helps to flush the stuff out too. And ibuprophen is the best thing to help with the pain and swelling during an attack. And try not to move the joint. The crystals will cause damage to the cartilage, and result in long term problems like arthritis. Good luck from a fellow gout sufferer. These rules have helped me, at least.
Those suffering from gout should avoid alcohol and any foods that are high in fat or sugar.

He should always avoid organ meats, liver, heart etc. Your docs office should have a brochure on this. If not, try an orthopedic surgeons office. They have brochures that have all kinds of things to avoid and what can help. You don't have to have an appointment, just go in and ask for the brochure and tell them why you want it.
