It takes a little concentration but your arms shouldn't be doing anything. Actually focus on your stomach and tightening it. If you still feel nothing you could try placing a plate on your chest for a little added weight.
There is another type of sit-up you could do called the Janda Sit-up> Lay on your back with your knees bent and place your feet behind an immovable object like a secure bar (not underneath it) This movement will disengage the hip flexors from the sit-up movement. With your arms crossed over your chest, inhale as you use your abdominal muscles to sit up. When the resistance on the abdominal muscles slackens stop and exhale. Then inhale on the downward movement and repeat.
There is another one called the 10 second crunch. Lay on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor.
Tuck your chin to your chest, contract your abs until your shoulder blades leave the floor and hold for 10 seconds. Arm placement can be on chest or held over head.
Both of those kill my abs.
The coach is right.
When you lift your head, part of that energy is going to your neck and upper back.
When you keep your head "still," your abs are doing all the work.
I bet you aren't coming up as high, and that's why you aren't burning.
what ever you do dont pull your head up that makes the crunch basicly worthless DO IT THE RIGHT WAY! if you dont feel the burn just do MORE and MORE til you do . and remember only do the crunches every other day
