1) Lie on back on floor, or hard surface, completely relaxed, arms down by sides, legs straight, head looking straight up.
2) Keeping legs straight, lift heels about 4 inches (10 cm) off floor.
3) Hold for 4 seconds (no more) then lower (don't drop) heels back to floor.
4) Relax for 20 seconds then start again at 2).
Do this 5 times (never more) each morning and evening and after a couple of weeks you will be able to feel the result.
Try running in the morning once you wake up, and then once more in the afternoon.

I take it you're not trying to lose fat in the stomach region, just to firm. If that is the case there are many exercises you can do to increase the muscle tone in that area without employing the traditional situps. These include exercises, like the plank, bridge, vacumn and generally if you do any weight training exercises, just keeping proper posture and using your stomach as the foundation for balance and stability. You will notice if you lift weights, regardless of the particular exercise, your stomach muscles get recruited to keep you stable. But proper posture is the key.
You can do cardio to burn the fat, but that won't firm you up.
You HAVE to exercise (lift weights, do strength training, etc.) if you want to tighten up.
The longer you wait, the harder it will be to see results.
If you are trying to get away from the "traditional" sit ups, then Pilates would be a good abs firmer. You can take classes, get a dvd, or look on-line for the poses. Pilates will strengthen your core pretty good. If you want a tight abdominal area you will need to use some kind of resistance to work the muscles, body weight always works well, this is why we do the crunches.
If you type in "abdominal exercises" into your search engine, you will find all kinds of them, some with the ball too.
