What's Best For Your Bones?
Those advertisements pushing milk as the answer to strong bones are almost inescapable. But does "got milk" really translate into "got strong bones?"
The pro-milk faction believes that increased calcium intake - particularly in the form of the currently recommended three glasses of milk per day - will help prevent osteoporosis, the weakening of bones. Each year, osteoporosis leads to more than 1.5 million fractures, including 300,000 broken hips.
On the other side are those who believe that consuming a lot of milk and other dairy products will have little effect on the rate of fractures but may contribute to problems such as heart disease or prostate cancer.

Milk drinkers may be gulping down future health problems.
Milk might not do a body good.
Milk. It does a body good, say some -- it does a body bad, say others.
Collegian Graphic: Non-dairy sources of calcium
While the National Fluid Milk Processors Promotion Board is trying to increase milk consumption among adults, some members of the medical research and nutritional communities say dairy is not only unnecessary for adults, but is also a poor source of calcium that contributes to chronic and degenerative diseases such as osteoporosis, cancer and heart disease.
Organizations such as the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine claim that the food guide pyramid suggests too much dairy consumption for adults. Additionally, the Washington, D.C.-based group is concerned that the Department of Agriculture, which establishes the nutritional guidelines, is influenced by lobbyists for the dairy industry, said Kathy Savory, outreach coordinator for the PCRM.
With claims of near-political conspiracy on one side, and accusations that research is unsubstantiated and merely connected to animal rights groups on the other, young adults being targeted by the dairy industry may not know who to believe, if they are even listening.
But the issue is not so much about politics -- it is about health. And whether or not you've "got milk," you may not know what you're getting when you drink it.
"We know, particularly with women, that we need more calcium as we age," said Larry Muller, professor of dairy science.
The dairy industry and many nutritionists promote milk as a prime source of calcium to prevent osteoporosis, but research suggests the opposite is true.
Studies comparing the diets of different countries reveal that the higher the dairy intake, the higher the rates of osteoporosis, said T. Colin Campbell, Jacob Schurman professor of nutritional biochemistry, an endowed chair at Cornell University.
Milk mustaches keep students smiling
"One of the greatest thieves of calcium is protein, especially animal protein," Campbell said, explaining that certain dark green vegetables provide a better source of calcium because they do not contain the animal protein present in milk.
Osteoporosis is believed to be related to calcium deficiency, but people are not looking at the whole picture, Campbell said.
"The best way to prevent osteoporosis is through activity," said Dr. Mark Clukey, a chiropractor in State College, who also said dairy is not the best source of calcium.
In addition to animal protein, caffeine and alcohol steal calcium from the body, Savory said.
Nutritionists across the board seem to agree that certain substances, such as the phosphorous in carbonated beverages, deplete the body's store of calcium. However, some have no doubt that milk is the best bet to combat calcium deficiency.

yes, too much cholestrol and fat.
if its whole milk you'll get alot of fat, but strong bones to support that fat.
not really. It should be good for your bones and teeths too. Experts recommended drinking 8 cups of milk at most everyday.
i dont think so you do need dairy
too much fat and cholestrol at times1 it will weaken your teeth!
Drink 2 cups of milk. That is waaaaaaaaaaay too much!
Yes it's high cholesterol which leads to heart disease.
I do know there is such thing as too many dairy products doing someone in the long term damage, but with you drinking the "skim" milk,i believe you are alright.
Too much of anything can be bad for you. If you talk to the people that have lived to be over 100 years old you would be suprised on how many of them drank, smoked and even ate very unhealthy.
They all say to take things in moderation.
With that said, you will most likely gain a lot of weight with that many calories from just the milk. I would take that in moderation.
She said she drinks skim milk and I assume lowfat yogurt. No, it's not really bad for you as long as you are eating a balanced diet. Lots of good vitamin D and calcium.
Well, it could be.
Some studies have shown that an excess of Calcium could lead to Prostate cancer and some have linked it to an increase in the chance of Ovarian cancer.
Plus, the Human body was not designed to process Cow milk, so your body is doing something completely unnatural in the first place when you drink milk.

There are some negative effects of too much milk. Too much milk can actually pull the calcium out of your bones and cause osteoporosis, but this would take a lot. Also too much milk could promote cancer.
The food pyramid recommends you drink 2-3 cups of milk per day (or dairy products)

Yes to much calcium can cause problems with the heart and the bones. There is also an association with some types of cancer and milk. The amount that you are drinking is probably okay. But drink skim, whole milk has way to much fat in it.
When our cow was giving four gallons a day, we, (a family of six) used to drink as much as we could.
We didn't want to waste it! We drank it raw, or made it into cheese or yogurt.
One thing though we were so satisfied that we didn't feel like eating other foods and we weren't getting enough greens. So if you include greens and fruits and veggies its so much better.
I don't know about drinking tons of store baught milk. The homogenization of the milk might make the milkfat stick in your arteries.
Then again, you mentioned that you are drinking skim milk! well I think you'll be ok. Cus where is the fat?
I can't drink skim milk because it tastes like water compaired to raw whole milk. But if you like it, ok!
I would go with ORGANIC milk, because it has no HORMONES or antibiotics, or stuff like that in it.
You know, there are many nutritionists which don't know the answer to that one?
Simply put? Yes.
Most people who get stressed, suffer anxiety, have sadness regularly can't sleep at night, tend to not know they might have an intollerance to dairy products.
Despite organizations like the Australian Dairy Board wrongly advertizing it safe for everyone, the fact is, folk with a psychiatric disability, can tend to be a lot healthier with not having any dairy, glutton, fizzy drinks and saturated fatty acids along with caffiene and alcohol. God, what a boring diet?
Well, it doesn't have to be? We truly are what we eat.
If you look around there are large numbers of alternatives out there without having to go to the health section in the supermarkets way over priced and the fact health food shops have wages rent and overheads like advertising to pay.
Focusing on what works in diet, I presume it is for the calcium? Diets offering protein supplements, without skim milk powder or whey to cheapen it, and a few vitamins help with herbs and lots more water. But soy milk is a great alternative too.
Too much of anything is not good. Wanna hear something gross? A blind date came to my door and he was a milk drinker. He almost made me puke. He had "slime mouth." He drank so much milk that his mouth was slimmy inside. Yuk!!
